Anxiety and panic attacks

Anxiety and panic attacks

Ok so today has been particularly rough and I've found myself extremely overwhelmed and having a panic attack. Several things have happened to trigger memories from events that I'm going/ gone through. Now I feel like I've tried every distraction possible but right now nothing is working to calm myself down. I'm open to ideas if anyone has anything to suggest please. I've tried cooking, cleaning, writing, crafts, colouring or drawing, watching a movie, listening to music, reading a book, playing games on my phone, doing puzzles, going for a walk, having a shower, breathing exercises, meditation, going for a drive.

I'm sorry to hear this @Former-Member .

DEEP breathing exercises? This can really slow down the body's flight/fight response.

When you mentioned breathing exercises, I wasn't sure if you meant dep breathing too.

@tyme thankyou. Unfortunately yes I have tried that. It's so frustrating that nothing is working.

Hi @Former-Member and sorry . these feeling sorts very oppressive I know coz that's how they happen to me .

One time by without trying to, just happened and I surfed t.v. channels and social media's and stumbled on funny things that made me laugh.

Simple thing but best medicine at the time 🙃

@Macey thankyou. I've tried to watch some funny videos but my attention span isn't allowing me to focus on anything right now.

Wow! It sounds like you've tried pretty much everything! I can only think of that 5,4,3,2,1 technique of 5 naming 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 hear, 2 smell, 1 taste. But i'm not sure that would help considering everything else you've already tried. The same with just shaking your arms and legs, or even body to try and release some of that tension.

You mentioned writing. Have you tried just writing down everything you are feeling or thinking? Just writing anything and everything down may help to calm your thoughts.

Other than that, maybe just talking to people here may help. It doesn't even need to be for support or advice... just talking about anything may distract you. Is it cloudy where you are? Sometimes I just like to go out side and stare up at the stars and think about the unimaginable distances and how many of those stars i'm seeing are just the light that left them 100s or even 1000s of years ago. Maybe i'm weird... but it just always calms me.

@MJG017 I've tried the 5,4,3,2,1 but I get to 3 or 2 and lose focus. And yes I've tried to shake it all out but it does nothing. Writing is either trying to write my feelings and thoughts out or writing a poem. Outside is a bit of a scary place for me at the moment. But it's rather windy where I am at the moment and there's lots of noises around because of it.

I'm sorry you're feeling this way. If you’ve tried many distractions without success, it might help to explore grounding techniques like the 5-4-3-2-1 method (name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste). You could also try professional tips from Richard Reid’s site, which specializes in managing anxiety and building resilience. You're not alone, it's okay to reach out for support.

Hi @Former-Member

Well done for trying so much, I know that takes a lot of effort and persistence.

I'm sorry that things haven't helped.

One suggestion I have is the alphabet game.

I pick a topic and go through the alphabet with it.

For example I pick animals.

A is for antelope

B is for bear

C is for caterpillar

Keep going until you get to z.

Another one I do is foods.

A is for apple, b for banana, etc, etc, etc.

You can use any group/topic you want.

Maybe worth a try.

@Snowie thankyou. Yes I do this too, but i usually find it works better if I have someone to do it with otherwise I just lose focus.
