Battling the stigma, judgement of BPD

Battling the stigma, judgement of BPD

I’ve never wanted change so much. At least that is how it feels to me right now. I really want change and I want a social change too. There needs to be more understanding around BPD and how to help someone through it. Do I just have BPD? Is there more complex mental health disorders that I am suffering? Possible identity disorders, manic depression, PTSD? I am a bright person with so much hope, optimism, goals and drive towards self care and self help. I really have a thirst for education and learning new things. I crave to study at university and really immerse myself in a professional world but it is hard with so many societal barriers and stigmas that surround Borderline Personality Disorder. Even I myself struggle to understand my own illness. It is debilitating and immensely challenging facing judgement, control, misunderstanding, resentment and hate. I feel like a prisoner to my own traumas in the face of others. What have I done to deserve such cruelty? Why am I deliberately psychologically traumatised? When will it end? Why am I sexually exploited and manipulated? Why am I not entitled to the human rights that others have? Why do I have to live in constant fear and many complex emotions. Relationships are enormously hard and frustrating for me to maintain. I lack attachment to them due to feeling totally disabled to my own mind. My relationship with men and women are both as equally complexing and challenging. My family are struggling with taking me seriously anymore and I feel ultimately dehumanised through society. I am sick to death of judgement and belittlement. Generally I manage my symptoms of mental health on my own. I have coping mechanisms like living a healthy balanced lifestyle, exercise, self care, art. I am strong but weak when it comes to anger and complexing emotions that I don’t know how to handle and don’t know how to get the tools to cope with them. It makes me afraid of others, wondering why I bother as I destroy everyone around me. I just disappoint everyone through my own ill behaviours. When it comes to blending in with others I struggle greatly to belong due to judgement based off episodes of aggressive behaviour. There is no remorse for Borderline Personality Disorder. I have made many mistakes in my life. It has been especially hard to come through such devastating, socially humiliating challenges and excepted as a person. I wonder why I have to feel such discomfort in myself. I am a woman, why aren’t I treated like one? I really want help. I need help and I need support. I want to create goals and I need help along the way. I am heavily controlled psychologically. I am misogynised. I am treated unfairly. I need help to break through my demons and be given a fair an equal opportunity in life. I want more life. I love life and I want to be apart of it but I can’t with the judgemental pressure of society. It is triggering. How can I set a safe environment for myself when my fundamental values say I’m not good enough? There needs to be change. I deserve to connect with other people free of judgement. It is so challenging living day to day with such complexing emotions that just never get recognised as improving. Why do I receive little praise for my achievements? Why do I get no congratulations for all that I have accomplished? Or why do they feel so limitless, as hate speaks louder to me than congratulations. I crave success. There needs to be a change. I have hope. I am a warrior. I care deeply what other people say and think, I have to, but it is hard when it is all negative. I’ve done it to myself, but deep down I am a good person. How am I supposed to achieve? Am I making more progress than I think?

Hello @Idontknowanon and welcome to the forums

Thank you for sharing what your experience has been like, it would have taken real strength, and I hope that this can be a safe space for you to continue to share without judgement.

I can hear how much work that you put into caring for yourself through your self-care, though I hear that you're looking for some more tools to help manage feelings and expressions of anger, is this the sort of help that you're looking for - other than acceptance, understanding and societal change that is so needed? In other words, what sort of support can we best provide you here on the forums?

And leading on from that, I'm wondering what sort of supports you may already have in place, or have had in the past?

Throughout your post I notice how confusing and contradictory many of these experiences and thoughts are, it must be so much to reconcile internally. I do also notice the strength in being able to end on the assertion that regardless you are a good person, and the thought that perhaps you may be doing better than you think. These things can be hard to see within ourselves sometimes and can take real work to acknowledge and voice.

Please know that you are not alone in your experiences, a thread that you might find interesting to read through is Raising Awareness of BPD - Flipping the Script - SANE Forums

Again, thank you for sharing here and for joining the community

Hello @Ru-bee !

Thank you for responding to my post with such insightful compassion and support. I feel so gushed with joy that someone has taken the time to connect back with a clip of my story and really show they care, so thank you you are so wonderful!

I am new to this forum and I don’t know where I can begin. Where I am at on my journey to recovery of my mental health is still very heavily stigmatised. I wonder if there are resources out there and support advocacies for BPD out there? I don’t want to go as far to say CPTSD as I wasn’t diagnosed with that but a lot of my triggers are outbursts of trauma triggered events and emotions from the past that complex my reality. It is quite confronting feeling like the whole world despises you, so thank you for taking the time to reply and making me feel less alone. You are awesome and your life matters so so much and all the joy you spread to others and give to yourself. Do not let other people dull your inner light. Let the haters hate and keep being true to you.

I am open to learning more about BPD. I have BPD but I am not BPD. I am sick of feeling a prisoner to it, so am keen to learn more about it in order to be able to sell myself (how to keep a healthy job, work colleague relationships), manage myself and advocate for myself in a positive light. I am sick to death of carrying a dark cloud of baggage around with me.

Thank you again for being so amazing. Keep being you and staying healthy and positive. You are worth a lot and deserve to be healthy.

Your reply brought a smile to my face @Idontknowanon

Off the top of my head, BPD Foundation does advocacy work. I know that there are quite a few members on here who do have BPD and can hopefully speak from their experiences of any helpful resources they've used. You may have already seen but SANE has compiled some info, factsheets, and other bits and pieces about BPD here.

Really appreciate that statement "I have BPD but I am not BPD". That's a really powerful reminder not only to yourself but to all of us that we aren't our MI

@Ru-beeit is so nice to know that I bought a smile to your face. What a wonderful thing to bring to someone else. I am smiling back. It is also great to know about the BPD Foundation! What a relief to know that there are advocacy systems in place. I’m certainly going to be doing my research in this. Thanks so much for your insight and sharing this with me.

Re: Battling the stigma, judgement of BPD

hello!
thank you for taking the time to really breakdown and express how you are/were feeling. I find it can be a real challenge when we feel isolated. I am currently doing the DBT program, and they have encouraged "cheerleading" where you need to praise yourself, even for the little things. I hope you are able to find a support circle to help cheer on your accomplishments!

Welcome to the forums @bigreader . Happy to see you here. Hope you are okay.

@Idontknowanon , Yes, the Australian BPD Foundation work tirelessly in advocacy and supporting carers and those with BPD.

Project Air - University of Wollongong NSW and Spectrum (BPD and Complex Trauma specialist service) in Victoria also have supports and programs to support individuals.

Re: Battling the stigma, judgement of BPD

Oh, I have BPD myself so I totally relate to the stigma... it's so hard. In a way, I feel it's because BPD support is so different to the supports for other MH conditions. People just don't know enough about BPD.

I completed just over 18 months of mentalisation based therapy. Such a unique therapy, but it worked... @Idontknowanon @bigreader
