Something’s not right

Therapist issues...

Therapist issues...

Something happened in therapy on Tuesday that I'm very conflicted about...

I appreciate my therapist so so much... but part of it... towards the end... it stopped feeling like therapy and rather I was consoling her...

I understand that I'm really easy to talk to and it came out of a place of wanting to be completely transparent with me about the next year...

She's only become a full therapist march this year and has had to take extensive time off and left me in the lurch... now she's taking January off... and doesn't know if she's coming back...

She was open and transparent with me about her struggles with doing this job... she cares about her clients... she cares about me... but to share that she's so so overwhelmed and struggling... that she's staying for her clients... and me? consoling her? it feels like a shift...

and she asked me not to tell anyone...

I don't know what to do

I guess we have to remember that therapists are humans too, and sometimes, if they do not have the supports in place, their work can really impact them @avant-garde

At the same time, I wonder if their need has taken over their professionalism?

Do you have a contract that you can refer back to?

Re: Therapist issues...

@avant-garde . Hmm. I suggest you don't tell anyone but don't encourage her to confide in you. Refer her to another therapist if you know one and find a 'Plan B' for yourself.

Re: Therapist issues...

@tyme I just requested a copy of the consent form

@Cleo2 she's trying to find someone for me for January to fill in her leave... that I may request to stay with them if she were to come back...

Re: Therapist issues...

What's your 'gut feeling' with regards to what happened today @avant-garde ?

What is your gut feeling telling you to do?

@tyme

Keeping quiet doesn't sit right...

My trauma is telling me that she'd lash out or coerse me if I mentioned it to her... which isn't her nature at all... but to go to her supervisor... I feel like she would be disappointed in me if I did that... she trusted me in her vulnerability and I don't want to break that and ruin the relationship that we've developed... but I feel like that's a friendship stance not a professional stance...

*internally screams*

I hear you are torn between the two.

I guess, if you continue to see here, then things need to change.

However, if you don't think you'll see her again, then that's different.

I'm hearing she really needs support at this time, however, opening to your own clients is probably not part of the contract.

@avant-garde

Remember, you are NOT there to be their therapist. You need to look after YOU.

Re: Therapist issues...

I have 2 more sessions with her... then 2 sessions with a colleague of hers yet to be determined... then potentially back with her... while I'm on another government waitlist for 6 months...

Re: Therapist issues...

Do you feel you want to continue with her? Or do you feel if you see her again, it'll open up a can of worms? @avant-garde

Anyway, I'm not telling you what to do. I just hope that you are able to focus on your own recovery and support.

The only thing though, is if she was a peer support worker, then that's different. So when you said 'therapist', is that a counsellor, psychologist, social worker?

@tyme

Psychologist

I can't sit with this unrest... it isn't good for me... but the seizures increase without a therapist... so I know I need to see one... I don't want to tell her supervisor... but I think for my sake and for hers... I think I need to...

Re: Therapist issues...

Take a deeeeep breath my dear.

Once again, I cannot tell you what to do.

However, IF I were in your position, I would let management know that I am not comfy seeing the same person and whether there was scope to change therapists.

@avant-garde . I can see how difficult this is for you.

Would you consider sleeping on it tonight and re-evaluating tomorrow?

I wonder if you would be interested in SANE Guided Recovery if you haven't been part of it already? https://www.sane.org/referral You can check your eligibility.

This does not replace clinical support, but it can utilised in the meantime.
