Anyone started with the NDIS?

Anyone started with the NDIS?

Tells my story from initial application (Feb '17) to acceptance by NDIS (July '18) and the process of putting things in place and progress, improvements, managing and difficulties since then. Now Jan '21.

Original post : I've recently moved and will need to get into the NDIS in my new location. Wondering if anyone in the forums has successfully done this? Any advice would be welcome. Feeling swamped by their website.

EDIT : I was finally accepted to the NDIS and am now 3/4 through my 2nd plan. With only a small reduction from the first year. And this plan is for 2 years so I don't have to jump through all the hoops with a review this time next year. To all others on this path I say ........

IT'S REALLY WORTH PERSEVERING!!!

Hoping this thread helps all who come here.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

Thanks a lot @Mazarita and @Bunniekins I thought my adrenalin would be running high this morning but instead I'm feeling quite foggy. Hoping my mind clears soon. I'm anxious but can't do anything more until sil surfaces for the day. Bro and sil are both coming to the meeting, along with disability advocate. I wish I felt as prepared as they all say I am.

Hi @eth, thinking of you. I think your meeting will be in progress at this point. Sending love and good wishes again. Looking forward to hearing about the outcome, when you are able to write about it next.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

Good morning @Mazarita@Twinklelight@Bunniekins@Teej@Queenie

The meeting went for 2 hours! The first thing done was a WHODAS assessment (World Health Organisation Disability something - google it). I had done one before with my psychiatrist but because of getting more recent reports in more detail, and the statements written by bro, sil and myself (all when we were preparing for an AAT hearing) - I was able to be clearer about my answers, understood the questions better. The same would be true for the many other questions asked. But I was still very emotional.

The main other thing I'd say to be prepared for is they only wanted my 3 most important goals. Luckily sil had done some last minute work yesterday morning consolidating my 7 goals into 3 main areas. The LAC interviewer tried to reduce the scope of the goals but sil didn't let her get away with that.

My disability advocate also raised a couple of questions to the interviewer at the end that were really useful.

I'm still emotionally hung over from it, perhaps more details will come back to me in time.

Hoping my story can still help people.

The list of planning meeting questions I posted in this thread some time ago is pretty spot on - sorry I can't remember which page it's on, but I think having gone through that and had a practise run at answering all the questions was really valuable preparation for the meeting.

Hi @eth. Thanks for sharing how it went yesterday. 2 hours is a long time! I can understand why you'd be feeling emotionally hung over.

Do you know what the next stage in this is and when will you know the outcome of yesterday (if you feel up to/are able to share)?

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

She was an LAC, a bit late to start and going so fast I couldn't follow her and had to ask her to slow down. The first thing she did was a WHODAS assessment, then pretty much all the questions on that list of planning meeting questions I got from a file I think is on the Mental health and NDIS files. Downloaded it some months ago.
It was clear she'd only read reports and statements up to our internal appeal, and not all the T docs up to preparation for the AAT hearing that didn't end up happening.
I had 2 family members and a disability advocate with me and they helped me several times to clarify my answers. They didn't let her minimise my goals which she seemed to be trying to do at one stage.
Mostly I felt heard, thanks to my support people.
She didn't ask me to specify the hours I wanted. I think this was because we stated that I was hoping to join activities I haven't yet been able to coz of no NDIS funding yet. And I don't know exactly when they'll be on. But we did make it clear that support for community and social activities needs to be flexible e.g. different times from week to week depending on what I want to do. Quite a bit of talk about my transport difficulties too and that travel training is a longer term thing, I need support to travel currently.
Not sure how to edit this. Hope it will be allowed to post here as I don't have the energy to type it all again.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

@CheerBear The next thing is they will work out a plan of funds allocated to me and send it to us. Meant to happen within a month or so - no guarantee was given. Then will be a process of finding the right people for supports, starting service agreements with them and being plan managed by a professional, but with a family member nominated to be involved in managing the plan too.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

Far out. I feel overwhelmed just thinking about all of that @eth :face_with_rolling_eyes: You're doing so well navigating it all, though I get that it comes from lots of hard work on your part.

Today is the day I make my weekly call to the NDIA to chase up my access request. It's probably going to be the same answer as always "there are long delays and it's still being processed" but I am not going to sit around just wondering, so checking once a week is my plan. I'm stuck here in limbo land until I hear about it.

Re: Anyone started with the NDIS?

@CheerBear I know limbo land well! Keep on them about getting access approved. It's really unfair how they put time limits on us but don't have them at their end.

Stay strong!
