Talking through trauma and PTSD

Anyone have trauma from institutions like school and work?

Anyone have trauma from institutions like school and work?

I don't mean things that happened during school and/or work. I mean from the institutions themselves.

Been talking to a new therapist recently and have discovered that a lot of my trauma probably comes from "being institutionalised" during school and later work.

For me me this presents its self like:

  • Feelings the work/school is/was a punishment
  • Feeling of lack of freedoms and self determination
  • Fear of authority figures - teachers, supervisors, bosses
  • Fear of accidentally doing something wrong or breaking the rules and being punished for it
  • Constant fear that something might go wrong, eg getting fired
  • Constant feeling of being watched, monitored, and judged
  • Regret that so much time is spent doing something that feels so fear inducing

I can clearly identify the moment my MH issues started. I was 7 and in primary school in year 1. I kept getting into trouble - not from being mean to other kids, but just because I wanted to do my own thing. I had this idea that as a person and individual I was entitled to do whatever I wanted. It was fine it other kids wanted to go inside at recess and read, but I wanted to play outside longer.

The teachers would yell at me time and time again and I remember one day I broke, and shut down into a crying mess not really understanding fully what I was doing wrong. From that day forth I did everything by the rules and would check in with teachers constantly asking if I was doing anything wrong. From that day I feared teachers and hated school and became depressed.

Now as a middle aged man I still hold those feelings. I hate work - absolutely hate it. Not my job, or workplace - they're great in the scheme of things. But I hate trading in my freedom and life just to keep a roof over my head and food in the fridge.

My therapist recons this is a type of unresolved trauma I have. She's probably right. But now what? I can't believe I can learn to like work (again, I can like a job but not the concept of work). I struggle to stomach the trade of working the majority of my waking life and putting my own needs 2nd all the time (I mean, if you don't count shelter and food and all those needs money and a job can buy).

I also realise the irony there, too - if I didn't work and couldn't afford food or bills or whatever life would be far worse than it is now.

Anyway, does anyone else feel this way about work/school?

I'm very sorry that all has happened to you. I hope you're daughter is able to get the medical attention she needs and will be well and that you are able to find a secure place to live. Best of luck to you.

@Jlol I definitely apologise if it seemed that I was implying you could just up and quit with absolutely no repercussions. I fully acknowledge that having all of our basic needs chained to these systems of oppression puts us all in a constantly precarious position where a 'wrong move' could have us living on the streets.

I don't have a solution for that. I have had my own existential crises about the devastation of these systems upon the global human consciousness. It is a deeply painful awareness. I think all we can do is focus on what is within our control, and work on our internal narratives to help shape our experiences of reality. If we truly believe it is hopeless, then it will be.
