Need Advice

Need Advice

  • Hi,

I am currently in a Psychiatric Unit crying all the time, have no motivation and feeling suicidal and I can’t get the stupid doctors to listen to me. I swear my medication needs looking at.

does anyone have any tips on how to get the doctors to listen to me?

Cheers

Re: Need Advice

Hey @Alecam, thank you for sharing your experiences and posting on the Forums!

I'm sorry to hear that you are not receiving the treatment that you need in the hospital. I encourage you to continue to share your experiences with the community. You are best placed to reach out to the nurse who is allocated to you for their shift to make the most of the support that is available to you right now.

Advocating for yourself while in the hospital is empowering you may have the most success if they have a history of how you feel about your medications and what's going on for you while in the hospital. Keeping a written record of your symptoms and side effects of any medications may be beneficial when advocating with a psychiatrist too.

I hope that helps!

Take care

Re: Need Advice

Hi River Seal,

Thank you for your response. I have tried reacting out to the nurses and they say they are too busy to talk. I don’t know how much more fight I have in me and I feel so alone.

When we are in the hospital @Alecam it's usually the best place for us and it also presents challenges that can be uncomfortable. I have always found to be that way, and I try to accept that I am there. The nurses are your best form of support right now and advocating for yourself with your treating team. Take care RiverSeal

Re: Need Advice

Hi @Alecam, sorry to hear you are having such a hard time getting anyone to listen to you. I must be making a bad situation so much worse for you.

I can't add much more than what @RiverSeal has already replied with. You are in the best place you can be right now. Just try your best (far from easy, i know) to remain as calm as you can and keep asking if you can speak to one of the nurses. Hopefully some one will be able to talk to you soon.

Re: Need Advice

Hi @Alecam

I just got out of a Mental Health hospital last week.

It is hard when we are not listened too. It makes us feel like what's the point in even trying anymore. I have been in this hospital a few times and have had good and bad experiences.

I would continue to try and speak to a nurse. They have a duty of care to listen. Yes they may be short of time, but your wants and needs are just as important as others.

A medication review should be something that they do. Have you got access to just a doctor or a psychiatrist? Even though both should be able to do a review for you.

Hi, I can understand because I have been in hospital too. All I can say is that the nurses have the your best interests at heart.

Re: Need Advice

Hi @Alecam . I’m sorry you’re having trouble in hospital. I know what that’s like as I’ve been there and it’s not great. My best advice would be to try and reach out to the nurses when they come around to check on you and to speak out to the doctors/other medical professionals when you are given the opportunity. I was known to go to the nurses station and request to speak to someone when I felt I wasn’t being heard or respected. See if there is a peer worker in the ward as they may be able to speak to you as they have a lived experience of mental illness as well. Maybe also see if there is a psychologist on the ward or a social worker that you can arrange to speak to as well? These are just suggestions that have worked for me so feel free to try them as well as the other suggestions from @RiverSeal @Snowie and other forum members.

Please stay in contact on the forums as there are other forum members who might have other ideas as well.

Take care!
