Psychological Evaluation, what is it - what isn't it?

Psychological Evaluation, what is it - what isn't it?

I've been told that an evaluation was carried out on me during what I was told was a social event - a meet'ngreet conversation... That evaluation is cited as justifying some decisions I'm not satisfied with and unable to access.
So, I'm hoping someone can give me, if not a text book definition (which would be great btw), at least the key criteria for what constitutes an evaluation.

For example, does the client or subject of the evaluation have to be present?

Likewise, if there are any circumstances, behaviours which would indicate or preclude an evaluation from taking place, I'd very much appreciate information.

Even a link (or 2 or 3) to a principles and practice reference work would be very useful.

Hey there @Kaliesqe welcome to the forums! 😊

That must've been a bit confusing to have an evaluation completed without your knowledge. Is there someone you can discuss this with?

Here's a link to the Australian Psychological Society, if you scroll down to 'general issues', there's a few subtopics there that might interest you: Psychological testing | APS (psychology.org.au)

Also, feel free to introduce yourself and meet other members on the Newbie's Social Club! We're really glad to have you here 💜

My knowledge is that it's a broad umbrella term

Some practitioners use set questionairres

Other see you and think "The patient seems nervous. Why do they seem nervous? The nervousness appears to peak when I mention (whatever/easter bunny/politics etc) and just feel their way to a broad assessment of things like your safety to yourself and others, and sometimes a loose working theory for a diagnosis

Wow. That is messed up. You should at least get paid for your time if they're using you as test subjects.

Thank you for your comments.
My confusion is significant & your everyday language/different perspectives helped my clarity.

I have a follow-up set of questions, and I'll be a tad more informative, not least in the hope that the request for information at least makes sense.

The alleged test took place afaik, as part of the get to know everyone process - within a multidisciplinary service provider. It wasn't a service provision appointment, just an invitation to come along and put faces on names. (I was expecting something like a fruit platter & possibly muffins).
Actually, it was just a chat between my case manager & their head of team. I largely sat on the couch and waited to be social & ask a few questions about the planning.
The program was changed afterwards - I'm told - as a result of an assessment held at the time. In fact, it was terminated.

There was a complicated phase involving many weeks of the provider failing to respond to increasingly fraught calls from myself & my GP. Then different explanations from different people - suggesting that the program was better delivered elsewhere, that the program had budgetary concerns, that someone thought I was moving interstate(?!?) as well as many inferences that suggest (my surmise), some kind of personality clash or trust problems... .

My problem now, is that as a result of all this, I have become significantly worse. All attempts at communicating with the service provider are being rebuffed.
So, to deal with my own trust problems, and not make things worse. I'm looking for objective perspectives that give me more clues and concrete expectations to assess what has happened and my current situation.

So, I'm looking for accepted metrics, something that enables me to look at my signs/symptoms then & now. I'll write this up & probably develop a table/chart to do the arguing for me.
Also, I need the sort of metrics that assess qualitative changes as a result of therapy or, for that matter, iatrogenic prompts.
To be clear, I'm not asking for people to take sides, just to help me be as objective as I can and be as prepared as I can be, when & if, I can get this all addressed.

I'm doing this not least because everyone says to go to the HCCC (I'm in NSW). Their response was, "What the fuck are you talking about. Call back when you know what you want to complain about."
And so, I will.

So you're looking for some evaluation tools that you can use to chart yourself and have this to help to back yourself up with your needs for support @Kaliesqe, is that right?

It does depend on what symptoms you are experiencing, but some pretty commonly used tools are the DASS-21 which looks like this, and the K-10 which looks like this.

Neither of them are diagnostic tools and they aren't failproof, but they do allow a snapshot into one's wellbeing and are frequently used for things like mental health assessments with your GP or when completing intake for a therapist.

Hope that's helpful!
