Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

Can’t stop crying and feel all alone without any future

Can’t stop crying and feel all alone without any future

Hello 👋 I am struggling everyday with thoughts that my life is useless and that I am a burden on everyone… especially my grown up daughter and my elderly mum. I am a recent breast cancer patient and I am a late diagnosed autistic female.( ASD Level 1). I also have an autism related Eating disorder called ARFID and I am currently living alone and I cry most of the day, every single day. I was the full time live in carer of my elderly mother who has blood cancer until early August ( 2 months ago) but after a social worker called the police because my only brother kept coming to my home and abusing me both verbally and physically ( unfortunately he has Schizoaffective disorder) my mother blames me for getting the police involved. She has gone to live with my brother and he now won’t let my mother see me anymore and he has cut me off entirely. I am feeling so distressed, traumatised and lost and can’t stop crying. I try to call help lines everyday but no one can understand what I am saying over the phone as I can’t stop crying. The more I talk to people the more I cry. I am feeling so scared, alone, depressed and very guilty for being like this… I just can’t seem to find the will to carry on anymore and then the suicidal thoughts take over. Can someone please advise me on how to stop crying and to find a reason to go on?

Re: Can’t stop crying and feel all alone without any future

Hi@Startover24 and welcome, I am glad you have found us! I'm really sorry to hear how difficult things are for you. I know that myself and many others here can relate to the feeling of being a burden. It can be so hard to convince our brains otherwise, I know - but I promise you you are not anywhere as burdensome as you think.

I 100% feel you on the frustration of relentless crying! Sounds like maybe calling isn't an option, but you could give the webchat style support a go? You definitely don't deserve to be in this alone. Lifeline have a Crisis Chat, or you could try Suicide Callback Service. No talking necessary!! Do you think you could give that a go tonight?

As a fellow neurodiverse human I can tell you that we did get unlucky with the crying. I cry soooo much, to the point I've had to explain to some of my loved ones that I'm not actually as upset as they think I am... Like I'm bawling over the tiniest, stupidest thing, and then have to convince my partner I'm not having a massive breakdown 😅 Please stay hydrated hun, and also fun fact crying releases cortisol, the stress hormone - so every tear shed is your body getting rid of a little smidge of stress!

I'm heading off for the night soon so can't stay to chat more, but hope I see you around again soon! And there's always a @moderator around if you do need 💜

Thank you so much for your warm welcome, kind reply and very helpful advice. I did not know that about the cortisol lowering effects of crying. It has been over 20 years since I have been able to cry so maybe that also explains why I am struggling to stop now that the flood gates have finally opened. I am also for the first time since the late 1990’s no longer living with my violent and abusive family of origin. Thank you for your support and understanding… it’s been a great comfort to me and whilst I await support from a Psycho Support Worker through Disability Gateway, I will definitely reach out online to the resources you have listed. I have been calling Life life often but will try the suicide call back live chat next time I am feeling unsafe and without hope for the future. God Bless you for your help, care and support.
It is an honour too to meet a fellow neuro divergent person. ❤️

Hi @Startover24

what you’re going through sounds so hard. I just came to this space as I also was crying and wishing I would or could stop, and also feel burdensome, sad and potentially useless.

i don’t know the answer to your question re: stopping crying (except sometimes distraction with care tasks(ie housework/chores) like cooking something or cleaning something.

This obviously may not work at all. And you may not want to cry your way to a clean oven or whatever.
Just know I’m thinking of you and wishing you well.
Families are difficult, having ageing and unwell parents is difficult/heartbreaking. Being a parent ditto.

i am going to cry and empty the vacuum cleaner and peel veggies for dinner - my kids are on their way home from school.

Chat back to me here if you like!

lots of love ❤️

hey @Semly welcome to the forums too!!

i'm so sorry that you feel that way, you are most definitely NOT burdensome or useless just for being human. like @Jynx mentioned, crying helps release a bit of stress so it has its benefits too! @Startover24 thought i'd share my way of 'trying not to cry' - not sure if this will help you but i like to find some private time to release all my tears and cry as hard as i can - i sometimes watch a sad movie or listen to sad songs or read sad quote to help me get into my 'crying zone' and i try to let it ALL out. and then i drink a bit of water to rehydrate 😆 usually i feel less likely to cry after i've let it all out - i also journal to process those sad feelings, sometimes processing it out on paper helps me feel less emotional afterwards.

at the end of the day, your tears and feelings are valid. but just know that you both are not less for feeling emotional. you both are worthy and deserving just as you are. 💙
