Isolation

Isolation

I'm 66,female. I am bi polar (on a mood stabiliser and anti-depressant); handle it pretty well and don't think that's the issue really. I live alone with dog and cat. A few months ago my son moved interstate. My sister lives interstate. I have no one here. I have never had many friends and now I'm down to one and, for a few reasons, I can't rely on her. I feel utterly alone. I like solitude. I like living alone but I think the isolation is really getting to me. I have little energy, feel anxious and hate going out. I avoid phone calls (although I speak to son and sister fairly frequently). My thoughts are often a bit dark and I have anxiety. I sleep a great deal. I know that I need psych help but I've bad experiences in the past. I feel powerless to do anything about this. I am so desperate that I'm considering going to a local church "coffee and chat" session tomorrow morning. I fear it will be a couple of old farts, like me, and they'll start with a prayer and then talk about recent surgeries. I might starting ranting. Or worse, collapse into tears. I think that I might go anyway but I'm worried about getting sucked into the religious trap, again. Your opinions?

Re: Isolation

Hey @Bead23

Social connection is a tricky subject for many people, including myself. I have done a couple of things in the past to help alleviate the isolation. I have used a combination of the app Meetup and Facebook to find groups that are related to subject matters that interest me. For example I have a Chihuahua and I used Facebook to find a meet up group for Chihuahuas and went along to that. Do you have any interests that you could look up groups for? Another thing I do is to go to the local mental health groups in the area. These are a little tricky to find out about but perhaps have a look what mental health organisations exist in your area and give them a ring to find out about any groups they run.

As for the church group...it's up to you but I would probably give it a go. I'm not religious. There's really one way to find out if it a suitable group and that is to attend once.

Re: Isolation

Hey @Bead23, thank you for sharing your experience with the community and joining the Forums!

It sounds like you are dealing with a lot at the moment while being isolated from friends and family. You are demonstrating your strength and resilience by reaching out to your peers and being vulnerable. You are really brave and it's not easy to share your experiences with others.

I encourage you to go to the church if you feel it would be beneficial for you and many people to find community and strength in religion. You never know how it might turn out and you might meet some like-minded people.

Have you ever spoken with a Peer Support Worker or someone with lived experiences of mental health issues? SANE has the Guided Recovery where you can have 6 1:1 session and share your experience with someone who gets it. Take a look here if you would like to find out more: https://www.sane.org/get-support/guided-service

Please stay connected with the community here and continue to share your experiences!

Take care

Re: Isolation

Hi @Bead23, welcome to the group. I;ve suffered from isolation for many years in my life so I know how hard it can be. I can't really suggest anything more that what @RiverSeal and @Ainjoule have already suggested, which were all great options.

I joined here earlier this year and have found the connection i've made with people here have really helped me, maybe it would help you as well to become involved here and get to know some people. There are plenty of social discussions you going take a look at. Other than that, I just wanted to let you know that we are here to support you in any way we can.
