Hi @Ouroboros. I don't really know without more information. The only thing I can suggest is there may be a way out if you can prove you weren't in a mental state to make a decision like that. Either way, I'd suggest getting some financial/legal advice from someone professional... maybe some of the free services that may be available where you live.

Sorry I can't be more help, but maybe there's someone here who has some knowledge in this area. Good luck, obviously it's not a small amount and is obviously extremely stressful right now.

Hi @Ouroboros

What a stressful and distressing position to be in. My first thought is seeking financial advice through services such as the National Debt Hotline on 1800 007 007 or perhaps legal advice from Legal Aid?

I wish I had more guidance here, maybe one of our brilliant community members will, but those are where I might start.

Aside from practical advice, we are here be with you through this difficult time. Welcome to the forums community

Sorry to hear that happened. Have you talked to a lawyer? Did you enter into any contracts whilst in that state? This isn’t legal advice, but a person needs to be of capacity to enter into a contract. If you entered into anything whilst not being of sound mind it is grounds to void a contract or find out about possible damages.

Hi @Ouroboros

I truly empathise with what you're going through financially.

I’ve personally made some difficult financial decisions during manic episodes, which led to overwhelming consequences.

In my case, I sought the help of my GP, psychologist, and provided a Statutory Declaration to explain that I wasn’t in a sound state of mind when I signed certain agreements, and I honestly don’t even remember doing so.

I also took steps to regain control by seeking financial counselling, limiting my access to money, reducing my daily spending limits, and informing my bank of my situation so they could offer the necessary support.

Most creditors are willing to negotiate, especially when you have a financial counsellor advocating for you. They may agree to payment plans or adjustments, which can ease some of the burden.

I understand how overwhelming debt can feel, but there are resources available to help you through this. I’m confident you’ll find your footing again.

The National Debt Helpline 1800 007 007 can be a great place to start. You can also reach out to Centrelink, as they offer free financial advice and support.

May I suggest seeking emotional support during this time, as financial stress can have a significant impact on our mental health. Maybe talk to your GP about getting a Mental Health Plan to access counselling or psychologist sessions.

I know it feels incredibly stressful now, but once you have a plan in place and the constant pressure from debt collectors eases, things become more manageable.

It’s important to remember that this is a common challenge for those with bipolar disorder, so please be kind to yourself.

Kindly Alisse

Yes it happened while in that state, I kind of feel when it starts to happen now and try to keep to myself but the isolation is killing me.

@Ouroboros just a lil tip, if you want other members to be notified that you've responded, you can tag them - use the @ symbol and a drop down will appear, and you can choose their name. If their name isn't there, you can type it out and it should then appear for you to select, then it will show up in blue, like this: @Alisse
