Concerned about paranoid delusions.

Concerned about paranoid delusions.

A relative with bipolar has developed paranoid delusions about their parent, and I am quite concerned about the safety of all concerned.

I have witnessed this person and their partner abuse the parent for approx. 3 years, and recently the partner had escalated their abuse. Myself and a few others stood up to the abuse, and this has now caused the partner to retaliate and also for my relative with bipolar to develop paranoid delusions about their parent.

I don't want to escalate things further, but I am very concerned about the safety of the parent, but also the mental health of my relative with bipolar. What can I do? What supports are available to the parent? Any advice or shared experiences would be great.

Hi there @Thewillowtree ,

We wanted to take this opportunity to welcome you to the forums. Feel free to Introduce yourself here if you haven’t already!

This situation does sound concerning. Are you concerned about their immediate safety? If so, i would recommend calling 000. You can also call Orange door, regarding abuse from partner and seek assistance/guidance from them.

Is your relative connected with any services for support?

Hi @Thewillowtree

Thank you for sharing some of your concerns with us, and welcome to the forums.

I'm sorry to hear that things have gotten so bad for some of your family, that must be a really tricky and anxious situation for you.

I'm not sure of the ages of the people involved, as that might change some of the dynamics, ie potential elder abuse, etc. That being said, it might not hurt to give a specialist domestic relationship service a call and talk through some of your options.

You could try 1800respect to chat through some of the dynamics, or you might try The Orange Door which is multi-service support agency that may mean you won't need to bounce around from call after call to get information.

Are you still able to talk about things with your family member?

I understand you're in a difficult position, not wanting to make things worse. Hopefully you're able to get some useful support options, while also prioritising healthy boundaries for your own wellbeing.

Take Care

Thank you for your reply and support. No immediate danger, thankfully. I've reached out to 1800respect and will encourage the parent concerned to contact the Elder Abuse hotline so they can avail of support.
