Drug induced psychosis

Drug induced psychosis

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me. The other night I this I experienced a drug induced psychosis. It was brought on by smoking weed. It was the second time I ever smoked in my life and it happened the first time I smoked which was over 10 years ago so very stupidly I thought I would again.
I went into a deep paranoid state and was extremely scared that I was dying. I kept hearing the same things being repeated and was talking about stages and negative states with my friend who was trying to calm me. The really intense part of the episode lasted about 4 hours and then I was able to come to a bit and accept I was ok. It has continued a little bit though now and I am still afraid I am in some kind of state where I've actually been taken to hospital but I'm in a coma and this is just some kind of fantasy I am living. I've spoken to my friends and they have been super supportive but I still 100% don't feel really right and I just needed some help. I don't have a history or family history of schizophrenia, the only time this happened before it lasted a lot less than this and I was a lot less sketchy and paranoid. I keep rolling from feeling fine like YEP I am home safe etc etc to Nope I am actually in hospital and this is me just in some kind of dream going about doing my daily life. Like any weird beeps and stuff I associate with the hospital noises coming into my sleep and I think maybe when I am spending time with my friends as I have today they might just be visiting me? But then I know that is completely rediculous and apart of the delusions, my body is tingling a lot and I am experiencing pain sometimes in my wrists and joints.

Obviously I will never ever in my life ever touch weed again and I have made an appointment to see a doctor on Monday.

I am wondering if this will continue or if it's likely to pass and if i am likely now to suffer from a psychotic disorder or was it likely just the weed?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Drug induced psychosis

Hi, I too have had a drug induced psychosis 4 times in my life. I am 30 and only just realised this, it's created a big gap in my reality and would like to know if anyone has any ideas on helping recover or anyone I can speak to about drug induced psychosis? Also happy to hear your ok, glad you realised it wasn't a good thing early. Please ensure you take care of it, don't want it to come back at you later on

Re: Drug induced psychosis

Hi Thanks for the contact.

I was the original Poster on this thread and what happened to me was that I smoked Weed and it put me into a psychosis for three days. I spoke to everyone about it because it was super scary for me and I wasnt sure if I was going to be able to recover.

I really dont have much knowledge on how your partner might be coping but I do know that it is SOOOO hard to work out in your mind what is fact & fiction when its your own BRAIN telling you that these things might occure. What I kept believing was that I had actually died and that what I was experiencing was the "afterlife". So what my friends did is they got me to do things that I hadnt experienced before like they took me places id never seen so I could work out that I wasnt recovering memories from my past and living in heaven. I was able to figure out that clearly i hadnt died because there is no way I could have formed these thoughts because they were all knew experiences.

Honestly writing this down gives me shivers and I do get quite scared remembering back to this time in my life because they way I see it is there really is no way of telling 100% that I didnt die that day.. creepy I know, but its a tiny tiny tiny tiny experience which will stay with me for the rest of my life now and shape me ever so slightly. It is not something I am fixated on or reoccuring and causing trouble in my life. I realise it was a reaction to a drug I can never take becasuse it was the drug that did something to me, if I dont smoke weed I'm totally functioning (sometimes a little depressed) but yeah not thinking that im dead all the time and in some kind of fantasy.

As is with people that have psychosis that is not drug induced its something actually their body is causing and therefore completely out of the depths of my understanding but I do feel incredibly compasionate and a lot of care towards what you and your partner are going through because its incredibly confusing and scary to experience.

My only advise to you is to perhaps try and find a way you can help your partner differentiate between psychosis (make believe) and reality.

See, I knew i wasnt dead and in my afterlife when I started to experience new things. If there were some way you could be able to differentiate between what they are experiencing during psychosis to get them to recognise its not reality maybe that would help but I am not sure if this is achievable to the unique circumstances that you and your partner are experincing. Like I am not sure if this is relivant to their psychotic episodes as mine was all about reality what is what isnt etc....

I hope this helps. and even if not, please find a little peace in the fact that many, many people understand this and we are hear to converse with you if you need. Feeling alone when things like this happen is the hardest part. But you are not. there is 7 billion people on this planet and we have all experienced some crazy shit - we are a community that is learning to disconect more and more - so find some people who you feel like you can talk to and connect with and never EVER be ashamed.

Glad that you posted again @elski

I think your courage and suggestions are important. I am glad that you have managed to move thourgh the experience without magnifying its effect upon you.

It was good that you had real friends who actually cared for you during your crises. This isnt always the case.

I read today that in Mexico they are legalising marijuana ... it is cause for concern being reminded that many people have very strong initial reactions to drugs ... I know a lady who wasnt treated too well by her supposed best friends, mocked and ridiculed for her fearful responses to excess smoking, and ended up being diagnosed in late 20s as schizophrenic ... from my point of view, she had simply been betrayed ... but her paranoia became so intense I couldnt break through it ... though I tried and she went to live with her parents and I lost contact ...

I probably had many drug psychoses when a teen but only hospitalised during one. I rarely spoke about things if I was panicked as I was an external coper ... I was very used to being dissociated probably since 6, that I was also trying to explore my reactions while under the infulence of different drugs. Mind you it took a few years for me to learn the fancy word ... "dissociated" ... and then many more years before I realised it applied to me.

Re: Drug induced psychosis

I dont know if this post is relevant anymore but to the OP it sounds to me to be more a huge anxiety reaction caused by the marijuana and not drug induced psychosis.

You mentioned seeming panicky and that you were going to die and strong marijuana can cause this anxiety reaction in some women or other people that are weak or slight.

I had a reaction similar to this from too strong "happy gas" at the dentist where it feels like your shifting between reality and not reality and spacey and panicky-even almost hysterical- and it definately passes after a few hours or ,worse case scenario, after a few days.

I've known people who do have drug induced psychosis though and its different and the person has extreme irrational paranoia (not "just" huge self consciousness),
