Are You Thinking of Peer Work? Have your questions answered here!

Are You Thinking of Peer Work? Have your questions answered here!

This thread has come about after our Sunday Hangout tonight where the topic of Peer Work came up.

Just to share a little about myself and how I came to get involved in Peer Work:

I was working in a totally different industry. At the same time, I was really struggling with my mental health. It was these very forums that supported my recovery, and I felt that the more I reached out to others, the more I felt supported in my own recovery.

In my recovery, I also had peer workers support me. The hope they shared was invaluable.

From there, I volunteered to be a Community Guide did this for a few years. The call then came out for Peer Workers. This was when I put my hand up, completed the necessary training, and voila! Here I am!

It's been one of the most rewarding pathways in my life. It's given me a new lease on life and something to look forward to each day.

Of course everyone's story is different, but I hope this thread can answer your questions about Peer Work.

I reckon just keep looking around. Enrolments are usually for the Jan and July intakes so in the months leading up to the intakes is prob the best time to look. @MJG017

Thanks @tyme, I'll start to keep an eye out. First come, first served maybe 🙂

I think it's application based. So it looks at if you have a qualification already, your economic statues, whether you are employed etc @MJG017

Well, if you hear of any in your travels that would be available to South Australian's there's one here who would be very grateful.

@tyme I had my appointment with PASS this morning and I brought up how peer support has been really helpful for me. I mentioned I had emailed someone at Lived Experience Workforce Program (LEWP) a week or so back about taking the next step to pursuing peer support work. She said she used to work for them 20 years ago when i was starting is was happy to contact them and find out some more for me and see what was happening with my request. So it was quite a productive morning with that and all the other things I got to discuss with her.

Great stuff @MJG017 !

That's certainly a start. Peer work is huge. There's so much room for growth and movement, from policy, right to face-to-face peer work

Thanks @tyme. It's all so new to me, it's exciting to jump into something I feel passionate about but not knowing exactly where it all may lead and involve. I usually hate that sort of thing being a little bit 'risk adverse' but this feels exciting. Another personal change to add to the list! 😁

I can see peer support is IN you. @MJG017 You seem to just have the knack. I can't even describe it any other way.

For me, the peer work courses pretty much consolidated and confirmed all that I was already doing.

I've known people who have moved off the DSP after finding their passion for peer work. I'm not saying that you have to do this as I don't know your personal needs, but I'm just sharing that it IS an avenue for some people 🙂

I found the benefits of peer work are reciprocated. The more I reach out to others, the more I benefit from it. I think this is why I find peer work so beneficial.
