Bad experience with lifeline

Bad experience with lifeline

Hi,

This is my first time posting here. I called lifeline last night and it did NOT go well. I very rarely call because I have had so many negative experiences in the past, but I was desperate. I explained to the counsellor that a large part of my mess is that up until 18 months ago I had been in a very complex and abusive relationship with my psychologist for sixteen years. The counsellor replied...wait for it..."perhaps the abuse was an important part of the therapy." I feel SO sick jut typing it now. I hung up on him and ended up in a bigger crisis than I was before I called. I tried calling back but now I was super dysregulated and the counsellor hung up on me - the most common experience I have when I call lifeline I have submitted a complaint to lifeline via their website, but I'm not sure if they are able to trace who the counsellor was given that all I can provide is a time - I don't know his name or what lifeline centre he is located at.

Am I the only person who has had negative experiences with lifeline? Everywhere I look the message is "call lifeline" and yet the skill level of the counsellors seems to be very poor - and indeed it seems to have become poorer over the years. A lot of them seem to answer the phone in a tone that suggests I have rudely interrupted their evening, and most of them seem to have no idea how to just "be" with the big feelings at the start of the call. Along with my mental health issues, I have autism and when I am swamped with overwhelming emotions I lose the capacity for speech and make a lot of weird noises instead. I have learnt to get out "I am autistic, please don't hang up on me" as soon as they answer, but most of the time I still get hung up on. In this particular instance it actually would have been better if the counsellor had hung up, rather than say what he said. I will never ever be able to unhear his response Thank you for listening.

HI @Phoenix_Rising

I too had a similar experience with lifeline twice, once I think they actually put the phone down on me and walked away, there was no one there but I heard footsteps and people talking and another time they just tried to rush me off the phones.

I hear what you are saying @CherryBomb but my personal experiences which is all I have to go on is everytime I have reached out to the mental health system in one way or another I have felt so much worse after. I just dont bother anymore as I cant handle if I am in that place to have someone just disregard you like you are just a pain in the butt. I also understand how the mental health system is very underfunded which doesnt make matters any better.

Thanks Phoenix_Rising, the post was meant to be somewhat funny but also alerting people to the fact that robotic prompts and keypad options are not going to work on a person who has reached their limits. I actually had my Suicide Prevention Counsellor give me phone numbers where a person would answer straight away over Christmas. Then unfortunately my phone and internet got disconnected.

Hi @Change123, I totally hear what you are saying about giving up on reaching out. I went many years without calling lifeline at all, and have only just started again because I've been very isolated for the past year. However, I have now connected with a new psychologist and I doubt I will call lifeline again. In terms of keeping on trying to reach out...as I said, I won't try lifeline again, but I can tell you that the psychologist I have just connected with is the NINTH that I've tried in twelve months. In my experience, most mental health professionals are either unhelpful, or do harm. However, the thing that kept me trying again was that I know that if you CAN find a good psychologist/counsellor/therapist, it can make a really positive difference. I've only seen this one three times so far but my gut tells me that FINALLY I've found a good match. So yeah @CherryBomb, I definitely get the idea of keeping on keeping on...but I won't be rushing to call lifeline again.

Re: Bad experience with lifeline

Hi, I'm also new.
What a horrible experience that must have been. Unfortunately the people who volunteer for lifeline are usually not trained mental health professionals and have only had a very brief introduction to counselling before being sat in front of a phone.
I have also had several negative experiences with helplines, including the new "online counselling" and have given up on them completely.

2 years ago police were called to "section" me after a DV incident left me angry and distressed.
It was probably the best case scenario because I was introduced to an amazing woman at the hospital who worked as part of the hospitals CAT team.
She was caring, educated on my diagnosis, non judgemental and gave me the phone number for Northwestern Mental Health (1300 TRIAGE) to use whenever I'm in crisis.
You are able to speak to a nurse 24/7 who will ask if you think you want or need help (an ambulance can then be arranged to collect you and transport you to the hospital) or you can just talk.
I've used the service a couple of times (each conversation has lasted 2-3 hours or until my crisis has dissipated) and I find it much better than any helpline and even sessions with my psychiatrist because you can access the service immediately while you're experiencing distress without having to wait for a scheduled appointment...
I am in Victoria so I don't know about other states but would it be possible to contact your local hospital and find out if there is a similar service? It may be more helpful for you to speak to a trained nurse in times of crisis rather than a volunteer.

Hi @championrubychampionruby,

It's nice to meet another new person Thanks for responding to my post. Sadly, in my experience, most trained mental health professionals aren't much better at providing support than the lifeline volunteers. It sounds like you had a really positive experience with the person at the hospital. I get the sense that Victoria is miles ahead of NSW when it comes to mental health. I've been forming this view over the past couple of years based on various things I've heard. I've had a lot of very negative experiences in the NSW public mental health system. Indeed, I now have a lot of trauma-related issues related to those experiences, which actually impact my life more than the original issues that brought me into contact with mental health services in the first place Thus I will never call the CAT team. The only time I engage with the hospital is when I get dragged in there by the police because someone has misinterpreted my giant feelings as me being at imminent risk of suicide - grrrrrrrr! The last time this happened was in November. The police took me to the hospital at 9pm and I wasn't seen until 4:30am. Yeah...that's useful Then I got locked up in the psych ward until 11am simply because there was no psychiatrist on duty to sign off that I was fine to go home. Nope, me and the public mental health system definitely don't get along. However, as I said, I really get the sense that people tend to have more positive experiences in Victoria. I am curious to know how this apparent disparity has come about.

Re: Bad experience with lifeline

Oh man they suck butt. I did the online chat and because I wasn't agreeing with what they said they claimed I was to drunk to think straight and should end the conversation. Yes smart idea end a conversation with a person that said they where highly suicidal and drunkish.

The questions are so dumb. It's like you are being talked down to like a two year old. Will never go to them again.

No actualy that night I went onto another online chat sight and was telling someone help I need help and they reply we got someone that will be great for you do you mind me transferring you, so I said yes. Then pops up payment plans to be a member of the group to talk to certified councillors. I nearly screamed

Re: Bad experience with lifeline

@Former-Member It sounds like that particular night was super tough for you. I don't think people realise how much effort it takes to reach out and ask for help. To then have such negative experiences makes it so much harder to try again. I'm really glad I discovered the SANE forums. I feel like this is somewhere I will feel safe to "reach out."

Re: Bad experience with lifeline

Hi lovely ,

I have had bad experiences with lifeline to. They treat you as if they already know who you are or they seem to lie from my perception. I been calling them for about 2 years now because of my situation but I don't always get to call or don't want to especially on how they behave towards me! I sometimes call back if I had horrible one! And having a serious mental illness they made it worser then when I first started! I believe they make you more suicidal then helpful or cared for! It got to the point that I got triggered so badly! They make you feel bad for what you went through instead showing campassion even if I wasn't there for sympathy! Very black and white and if they are in the grey they give you anxiety! Like they make you wished you never called them in the first place! They definitely need better training or be fired they are lucky I didn't commit suicide after all that mayhem which also started a heated argument at home because of how I was treated! Now and then you get a few helpful ones but 98% don't seem to not care! I understand they probably hear shit all day but if they aren't strong enough then don't work or volunteer there! So you aren't alone in this! I'm sorry they treated you this way. Cyber hugs!
