Peer Group Chat// Let's Get Silly // Thursday 29th August 2024, 7-8:30PM AEST

On Thursday 15th August 2024, we will be holding a Peer Group Chat on the topic of Let's Get Silly!

Modern life can be chaotically busy and frequently overwhelming, filling up our lives with work, tasks, and other obligations. Yet we also know that being silly, having fun, and engaging in playfulness, is an essential part of a balanced lifestyle, providing opportunities to relieve stress, sharpen our creativity, and add more joy into our lives. So let's get silly as we chat about the importance of play!

The event start times across Australia are below:

This is currently held in Australian Eastern standard hours:

WA: 5pm

NT: 6:30pm

SA: 6:30pm

QLD: 7pm

NSW, ACT, VIC & TAS: 7pm

For anyone unfamiliar with Peer Group Chats, each focuses on a specific topic and is guided by Peer Workers with lived experience of mental health issues and recovery, &/or caring for someone with complex mental health. A counsellor is also present as a moderator to help ensure a safe environment for individuals and the group. It is a space for us as peers to share our stories and experiences, and connect with those who are going through something similar.

Peer Group Chats are hosted outside of the forums, using a platform called Chatwee. To join an Online Peer Group Chat, you will need to register for an account with Chatwee. On the night, follow this link and log in to your Chatwee account before the group starts.

Please see this FAQ for any questions you may have. For any issues on the night, please message the moderator of the group on the Chat platform. If you'd like to receive a reminder closer to the event, please support this post & we'll keep you updated.

Which bear is the most condescending? A pan-duh!

What kind of noise does a witch’s vehicle make? Brrrroooom, brrroooom.

What’s brown and sticky? A stick.

Did you hear about the actor who broke his leg onstage? He's still in the cast.

Sorry for the tech issues. We are following up with Chatwee. Tagging @Shaz51 @MJG017 @Jacques @Alonely @Captain24 @Former-Member @7cough9 and others following on.

In the meantime, here are tonight's questions and resources:

Q1: How do you define ‘play’?

Q2: Why might play be important in our adult lives?

Q3: What are some of the barriers we might face when it comes to engaging in play?

Q4: What are some ways we might work to surmount these barriers?

Q5: Sometimes our social conditioning can make us feel lame, embarrassed, or weird when we try to be playful. What are some ways we might be able to overcome this?

Q6: Play is often an opportunity for connection. How can we involve and encourage our loved ones in our play?

Q7: For a lil twist – what’s your favourite joke?!

Here are some further resources we recommend having a look at:

A few years back I got a bit obsessed to buying board games. I have quite the collection now. It's a bit like video games. These thing were once thought of a kid's things. Now though they are mainly adult things. What kids play board games anymore? My partner and I joined a local board game group. So these 2 examples, yeah they're fun for adults, but they're also a great source for socializing and meeting new people. You only have to look at the massive rise of online multiplayer video games and the renaissance in modern board games over the past decade or so. So many things I enjoyed playing with as a kid, I still do now.

Plus now, when I struggle mentally a lot of the time, my partner almost has to drag me to the board game group, when I'm not really feeling up to going. I do, and I always have fun (especially if I win) and I come home feeling better than when I left. I loved lego as a kid, but as an adult I can buy it myself and I have way more now that I ever did as a kid! 🙂 Same as 3d Printing a model of the robot from Lost in Space or the spaceships from Battlestar Galactica... useless items to sit on a shelf but they make me happy, building and looking at them.

@MJG017 A board game group sounds wonderful - a great way to socialise with people in a relaxed fun environment! I wonder if I can find something like that near me.

@AlonelyI know there's a few here in Adelaide, so If they're here, I'm sure there's quite a few more interstate as well. Depending on where you live obviously. Ours has a facebook group, and I think a lot of them would so maybe you could find one there near you.
