TW: Aftermath of infidelity & assault

TW: Aftermath of infidelity & assault

  • I'm in a pretty dark place. I've been with my partner for a year, and was recently assaulted by a health professional where I was sexually assaulted.

My partner was being distant with me at the time for reasons I wasn't aware of. I told him about what had happened and he insisted on getting all the details. He said he would take matters into his own hands and that the person would be dealt with suggesting physical punishment. He also questioned why I hadn't reported it to police and put pressure on me to do so. I've been through a lot already and am currently dealing with recovering from PTSD from a previous DV relationship and this incident has caused a lot more stress and I can't face going down a legal path and the stress that comes with reporting. I also don't want my partner to beat up the guy and have to deal with the consequences of what that could bring so I haven't given my partner the name of the person. He says I'm lying if I don't give him the details and that our relationship will be over if I don't give him the details. I feel stuck and like this is so unfair he's doing this to me and like I'm being backed into a corner. To add, my partner started sleeping with another woman 2 weeks before the incident hence his distance and isn't able to tell me why he did it and is using my assault to deflect from what he did. He was caught out by the other woman coming to his house exposing the affair. He says he made a mistake and wants to be with me, however I don't feel like he's really remorseful.

I'm so lost and don't know what to do as I love him, but don't want to be forced to give him the details and the affects of what could become of it.

Any advice would be appreciated a lot.

Hey @Dreamzy ,

Thank you for sharing. I hear how difficult this situation is for you.

I also hear your partner's concerns in regards to reporting it to the police. From what I know, there are special units in the police force that handle sensitive matters such as this and may be able to provide added supports. I hear how torn you are in this instance, yet I'm also mindful that in the light of recovery, you may be sitting with this for years to come.

Whatever you decide, please know we are here to support you.

Thanks, TW.

He is more pushing for the details so he can take matters into his own hands which isn't appropriate and will have negative consequences for all involved.

I'm struggling more with him ignoring my needs here and threatening me with his ultimatum about ending the relationship if I don't comply, especially after his recent infidelity. I think I'm clutching at straws hoping I'll be able to get through to him and to get him to understand the damage he's causing to be and adding more stress rather than being the supportive partner I need.

Re: TW: Aftermath of infidelity & assault

Hi @Dreamzy

I cannot express how sorry I am that you are going through this. I totally understand the stress that comes with persuing a legal path and reporting what happened to you, but please know that you don't need to rush to do this, and if you choose to go down this path please have supports set up to help you along the way.

There are a number of sexual assault support services available which are state specific. If you are interested, you can have a look at some of what are available here on a page at Reach Out: https://au.reachout.com/challenges-and-coping/abuse-and-violence/sexual-assault-support-services

These services can put you in touch with professionals that can help you process what is going on for you and can guide you through next steps in reporting etc if you choose to do so. These services are free too which is an added bonus!

It sounds like your partner thinks he is doing the right thing by getting justice for what happened to you. Are you able to explain to him the reasons why you aren't comfortable sharing the information with him, and how him backing you into a corner makes you feel?

Do you have any close friends or family that you can talk to about this? It sounds like you need to be careful about how you approach this with you partner, but it may help to be able to talk it through with someone you trust?

We are here for you 💙

Warm regards

Hi @Dreamzy

I'm so sorry that you've been through this. While my first thought is to encourage you to report this to the police, I completely hear and understand your hesitance and need to protect yourself and avoid the stress that comes with this process.

Regarding your partner's reaction it is disappointing to hear that they appear to be focusing more on their own needs in reaction to this - wanting express their anger physically - rather than being attentive to what you need right now. It's absolutely not fair for him to be putting this pressure on you to share these details.

Are you getting any other support at the moment, friends or family perhaps, or any other services you have reached out to? This is a lot for you to be trying to navigate and while we are here for you and we support you in whatever you do here, I am conscious that some additional, more immediate supports can be important in offering comfort

Re: TW: Aftermath of infidelity & assault

Hi @Dreamzy, I'm so sorry about what you've had to go through, it's hard to imagine what it must be like right now. Being male, I understand I may not be someone you necessarily want to hear from right now so feel free to ignore any or all of this.

Like others have suggested, I would reconsider reporting what happened. I get how extra traumatic it must be to even think about that process, but if you reported it, I'm sure it would be to someone specially trained to handle this and help you through as much as possible. If you then still find it too difficult to proceed then you can always decide to not proceed any further. They then may be able to point you to some support services you may find helpful. It's totally your decision, as it should be, so you need to do whatever is best for you right now.

As for your husband, my first thought was is his anger more about deflecting from his infidelity?! Either way, he seems to be more focused on how it affects himself rather than what you need right now, which should be his first and only priority. I really hope he sees this very soon and decides to give you the support and understanding you need and deserve right now. I really hope you are able to get some support from someone close to you right now, as I know how tough situations are so much more difficult when you feel you have to deal with them alone.

Re: TW: Aftermath of infidelity & assault

Thanks for your kind words.
He won't relent unfortunately and sees it as me being disrespect to him and that 'any other person' would report and tell their partner the who and where, to him, there are no other permutations as to the acceptable way to deal with this and its right to know. My needs and reasons of withholding because of the violence that will take place with the potential of perhaps dire outmes and consequences doesn't compute and is fully rejected so there really is no meeting in the middle, it's horrible.

Re: TW: Aftermath of infidelity & assault

Thanks heaps for your comments.
No, he doesn't seem capable of comprehending what my needs are and why I'm withholding and thinks I've made the whole thing up unless I tell him.

Re: TW: Aftermath of infidelity & assault

Thanks so much. I don't have anything left in me to go down the path of reporting at this stage. Not to say I may change how I feel when I'm stronger but I've gone through too much, so I can't push through it to satisfy his need for me to prove it's not a lie and gain access to the details he ultimately really only cares about.

Thank you, I appreciate all responses and the time you've taken to reply to me.
I'm not having much luck getting through to him which is sad, but there's only so much I can do when someone has a fixed mindset I guess.
