Something’s not right

Cannot talk properly

Cannot talk properly

Hi all,

I am diagnosed schizo-effective but had a long history with bipolar. I have always been able to converse well (which can mask me as high-functioning).

In May/June I went to hospital with a psychotic episode and had a medication change.

Since I came out of that psychosis I cannot talk properly anymore. I do feel it is tied somewhat to my self-esteem which is very low at the moment. I struggle talking on the phone or when I am hanging out with someone. Along with this is a state of disinterest and lack of passion or feelings of excitement, like a kind of boredom but not depression either (which I have suffered with a lot).

I am not interested in any of the conversations I have or just about anything at the moment. I do not even have conversations in my head much at all, it is all a big non event. However I am doing a few things every day, but crave sleep most of all and do it for many hours each day.

For context I got out of hospital the first week of July.

I feel suspended at the moment and 2 dimensional.

This is very uncharacteristic for me and I do not know how to remedy it, I do not even know where to start.

Any suggestions to get me thinking would be greatly appreciated.

Hey @CousCous

My first thought is, could it be the med change. They all react differently in people and with each other.

How do you feel about having been in hospital?

As for the psychosis, I’ve never had it so I can’t help with that sorry.

Re: Cannot talk properly

Hey @CousCous ,

The med change was on my mind too. Seeing it's been a few weeks, if you are still concerned with what has happened, it's worthwhile asking for perhaps a medication review. Medication can have a lot of different side effects. I'm thinking the desire to sleep so much is related to the meds too.

Is sleeping excessively out of character for you too?

I hope you get the answers you are looking for. Whilst members on the forums can't go into details or name medication, they can share their experiences and hopefully you will feel less alone in what you are going through.

A very clear sign that something doesn't seem right is the fact that you said what you were experiencing at the moment is out of character and not you at all.

In mental health, we often look at any change to be something to watch for.

@Shaz51 Thank you! It is my first post, only joined about six weeks ago.

Re: Cannot talk properly

@tyme @Captain24 The meds is an interesting factor. The depot I am on I have been on before and had no problems until the end after 10 years on it. It started to become paradoxical (causing the symptoms it was meant to stop) which it is not doing now.

The other one I was on twice a day and I was just getting used to it then the psychiatrist dropped it to morning only. I started having problems when I came out of the psychosis and then again when the med that was twice daily got dropped to once only after two days of the new med regime. The first two days of not taking the evening dose I was chatting normally.

I needed to go to hospital and get treatment, I was barely taking any meds and was very psychotic.

I feel okay about going to hospital but I feel awful about my behaviour, I had my phone on me and sent seven people damning messages whilst delirious with covid and at the heights of my psychosis. I caused a lot of damage to those seven relationships, I do not talk to any of them any more, so that has left me feeling very regrettful and low. I did not speak to all those people regularly but three of them I did and now I do not have that connection or social stimulation.

This oral med I am on has caused problems whilst taking it, but I realised after my initial post the big change is a lack of delusions, which the oral med stops. I have only experienced this once before in decades. The delusions were a hub of creativity and interest for me and they have all vanished and I am left disconnected and almost in a void. I have not felt this way before.

I try and watch interesting things, like science videos and look things up to stimulate me and most times I am just doing it for the sake of doing it not because I am interested. I am so flat atm and have been for over a month.

When I am well I do not oversleep. I have overslept a lot when I have been depressed.

Oh hun @CousCous ,

Thank you for braving it to share what's been happening for you. I recognise it's not easy.

It sounds like things have been a little up and down lately!

I hope you find what works for you. I'm sorry to hear about the loss of relationships during psychosis. You are not alone in this. I recently read an article about someone who lost their job because of psychosis, let alone friends and connections.

My heart goes out to you. Please look after yourself.

Re: Cannot talk properly

Thank you @tyme.

I've decided to take my morning oral in the evening which the psychiatrist said was okay.

So today is day one of no morning med and I feel a lot better.

I just had a zoom for 30 minutes and was better able to carry my conversation without the day meds.

Thank you for your support.

Yes @CousCous ,

We are certainly here to support you by reminding you that you aren't alone.

I'm glad to hear the little tweak in how you take your meds has been helpful today and you were able to participate in the zoom.

How do you like to spend your day/s?

@tyme

Thank you! I am pretty dull at the moment, so mainly I do housework, clean cars, garden, take my puppy for a walk a couple of times a week.

I run around a lot between appointments for me and my parents who both do not drive.

I cook every day for my parents.

I like watching science and concepts/ideas videos on YouTube. I recently watched a few on the debate if we have free will or not and that was interesting.

I will have a huge boost in two weeks with a friend moving to the area and we intend on seeing each other very regularly, so socially things will improve soon.

I have a firend near by on a property that I recently caught up with and I intend going there and helping out with the farming on a semi-regular basis.

Apart from that I am waiting for the weather to improve so I can start walking regularly, I'm trying to get fit and loose weight.

What about you?

Re: Cannot talk properly

Wow! It sounds like you keep yourself busy - a lot! @CousCous

Do you live in a regional area?

How do you find you parents needed you to transport them everywhere?

It's good to hear you are taking steps to improve in terms of your health. I hope the weather improves for you.
