Newbie's Social Club - Come make some friends!

Newbie's Social Club - Come make some friends!

Hey Forumites!!

This is a space for members new and old, to gather around and help make our newer members feel welcome!

We've all been newbies ourselves at some point, and can empathise with how incredibly daunting it can be entering a new space. A lot of folks have trouble even knowing where to start, and (even though we're in the midst of improving it all) we know the forums can be a tricky space to navigate - which can make it very difficult for newbies to be able to find their footing! On top of that, joining any established community means being 'the new kid on the block', and seeing others connecting easily with established relationships can sometimes feel like we aren't welcome, or that we need to 'break in' to the conversation somehow.

Well this space aims to alleviate that pressure and help facilitate some new connections! Whether you're brand new here or you've been here since the very beginning, you're welcome to come hang out, meet some new people, reconnect with others, and maybe even make a new friend!

We will try to tag new members as they join, so help us make them feel welcome!

Here's today's newest forumites:

Feel free to tell us a little about yourself, what brought you to the forums, and what you're looking for here!

Tagging in our lovely bunch of Community Guides too! They're seasoned members who volunteer their time and energy towards making the forums a safe and welcoming place for everyone. We wouldn't have the community we do without their efforts and their passion! Feel free to reach out to them, they're always quite happy to help guide and support 😊

Thank you for sharing this. @Stryk3r83

There are a lot of conversations surrounding BPD and loneliness on the forums. You could even start your own, if you'd like! I am just thinking that perhaps yourself and @peaceandsafety might be able to connect over this topic. 🫶

Hey @Stryk3r83

Thanks for connecting us @AuntGlow

I get what you mean about the loneliness. I feel this heavily this time of year.
Despite what I do, who I may see throughout the week or may talk to, I still have heavy anxiety that I'll have no contact or comms with everyone as all my friends have their own lives, the guys are all married, kids and the girls have their own things on (primarily family stuff).
I've already achieved this morning and yet, freaking out about what the rest of the weekend will look like.
Not sure if/how this resonates with you but that's a snippet of my internal world.

Re: Newbie's Social Club - Come make some friends!

It is a difficult time for anyone like us with ptsd. My two cents worth in regard to family gatherings is to have a time limit in your mind. I dont stay more three hours. Even that's too long. I sit in a quite space if possible. Perhaps if you are a fit person and meet a particular person's place then do a small job outside. That way you are not constantly just talking to people. People like to talk about themselves so just listen and nod.

Re: Newbie's Social Club - Come make some friends!

It's coming up to Xmas and I dont have family or friends to spend some time with.

Being completely alone makes this time extremely difficult

I have some seriously negative thoughts that I tend to keep to myself and I have to pretend to those around me that im fine.

Not sure how to get out of this isolation, but it is hard.

Hey @Stryk3r83

I'm sorry to hear that you feel stuck. I understand that in my own way.

Can you fill your time with things that's you enjoy like hobbies?

Or things that need to be done that you know you can take some pride in when completed?

I get it about putting on a facade around people.

Do you have any support during this difficult time of the year?

Re: Newbie's Social Club - Come make some friends!

Hi @Zoe8 - just letting you know I've edited your post to remove your first name, in line with our Community Guideline around member anonymity. We hope you're not discouraged, newer members often have things like this occur as they are familiarising themselves with the guidelines 🙂

We also have some how-to guides here, which show how you can start your own discussion. You can also jump into any discussion thread you see and hit the reply button to join the conversation. You could always start small with jumping into one of our social threads.

Glad to have you here as part of the community.

Hello @Zoe8

It does take a little while to find your way around and understand how it all works. It's worth it, if you can stick with it.

If you put a @ a drop box appears with names in there. People will usually reply. It's a good way to start a conversation.

I can tag you on the social thread What's been your highlight today, if you want. 💛
