Something’s not right

Need to vent about what happened today

Need to vent about what happened today

today I was volunteering at this place and I can’t reveal the organisation name for obvious reasons, but basically this man and I’ll call him A. He’s another another volunteer there that’s in charge of wrapping the pick packing orders.

So this lady, lets call her P is either in her 50s or 60s, and she’s doing the same role as I do (we both volunteer as pick packers), and she’s the one that I was working with today. (In this role you’re required to work either with one person or two other people)

I was working with her and this one other person.

Whilst her and I were standing on this pick-pack wrapping area while we were waiting for the other person in our group to finish writing all the stuff on the boxes from our pick packing order there and I was on my phone at that time while waiting, this man ‘A’ is either in the same generation as P, or a Gen X.

‘A’ saw that I was on my phone even though I didn’t look up at that time, and he had the audacity to say “hey generation”. I’m pretty sure he used that specific comment as an ‘insult’ towards my generation because of how sarcastic it was. But he said it directly to P since he was right close to her at the time and I can’t remember exactly what he said but I remembered he talked shit about me and young people in general going on their phones in situations where (in his opinion) we’re not suppose to. But I don’t see how being on my phone whilst waiting for someone in that area is the issue though??? And I don’t see any major issue about that either… so why does he make it seem like someone using their phones in that situation to be the issue??? It’s really not that deep and the fact that he made a big deal about it by being sarcastic about it is his problem, not mine.

And then P replied to him with something along the lines like “kids just on their phones..”and then A was like “it can wait.” so i knew for a fact he was talking to her right behind my back when he saw that I was on my phone…RIGHT WHEN I WAS PRESENT RIGHT CLOSE TO THEM! Does he think I’m not gonna hear him or not care about what he just said???😐😐😐

it would’ve been better if he just waited to talk to P about all of that when I’m not present, but the fact he chose to outrightly be sarcastic to talk about me being on my phone out loud to P behind my back was what really pissed me off.

And then way after that, I decided to tell P and ask her about why that man decided to sarcastically talk about me using my phone, she responded with something along the lines like “oh, well…I can’t say. It’s just how he is….but kids on the internet (something something).” I can’t remember some other things she has told me about. But she also told me about how in their generation they didn’t have phones at the time or something, and that she has a daughter that (I’m guessing) also does the same thing as I do….?

Then when I was being honest with P about I felt about people like that man (‘A’) being the type to be sarcastic like that or even people display a certain type of humour within them she just replied with “yeah. Just don’t let it get to you (my name), it’s not worth worrying about it.” which I appreciate I guess.

But then to try to cheer me up a little I guess, she did tell me that A himself painted his nails today which I didn’t know about since I didn’t see it lol.

But yeah after that I said to her “he should’ve not joked about it behind my back like that” she then goes “well it’s just kids on the internet that are the problem” and that’s when I stopped complaining to her about it because from what she said there as well as some of the other things (including the ones I’ve mentioned above) she told me, it’s giving me the vibe that she’s obviously siding with A and doesn’t seem to empathise with me.

And that also may explain why she was taking longer than usual to leave that pick-pack wrapping area that her and I were initially waiting for the other person at because both her and A had a long conversation, which I obviously know that whole damn conversation between them was about the younger generation being on their phones :face_with_rolling_eyes:

Overall, I’ve found the things that A decided to talk sarcastically behind my back to P about to in that situation to be incredibly unnecessary, insensitive and disrespectful. But of course, people like him obviously dont care that they might’ve upset someone and not everyone can tolerate someone’s certain type of humour. 😐😡

Hey @Blackcloud, sucks that you had to deal with this situation. It's frustrating when people talk behind your back, and even worse when they don't acknowledge or realise how it impacts you! Perhaps if it happens again, you could try talk to person 'A' and express how their comments make you feel?

Super glad you very able to come here vent to us 💛

@rav3n from my experience I just don’t get why it’s always the ones (especially males) in the previous generations that like to display a certain type of ‘humour’ that can come off as mean-spirited, unlikeable and insensitive to some people. And I feel that even if they know that they’ve hurt that person feelings, they wouldn’t even care.

I find it best to move on (but still hating him lol) rather than wanting to talk to him about it cause I don’t find that it’s worth talking to that person about it. Thank god I chose to volunteer at that place on a fortnightly basis instead of on a weekly basis.

Not wanting to talk to him is so valid @Blackcloud! Sometimes its not worth the energy especially if they're not the type of person who'd be open to genuinely listening or changing their behaviour.

Glad you don't have to see him often, hopefully you have other co-workers that treat you better 💜
