Unhealthy attachments

Unhealthy attachments

Does anyone suffer from unhealthy attachments? I currently have one with my manager, which is manageable as long as I don't spend time with him, particularly alone which I feel like he has been driving.

Its very hard to ignore someone who gives you special treatment and compliments and attention all the time.

Re: Unhealthy attachments

@Bonniebear can I clarify what you are saying?

  • Your workplace manager gives you special treatment and compliments and attention all the time.
  • Your workplace manager is driving to spend work time alone with you.

Is that correct?

Re: Unhealthy attachments

Correct, and he has instigated every time we've been alone together eg coffees that feel like dates, asking me to meet him in the city (I declined), wines after work on a work trip, and asking me to take him to the airport.

Re: Unhealthy attachments

I do right now. It just gives me alot of anxiety. He's never stepped over the line. But I'm confused.. not really sure what to do or feel. When he doesnt speak to me I feel like dirt.

It sounds to me like he is clearly interested in you. If you are uncomfortable and do not have the same feelings then you need to set boundaries. Thank him for the invite but stipulate that you would prefer to keep it a professional relationship.
Some may use their role as a way of grooming you or abuse their power.
Glad you have realised that he’s making you uncomfortable. Let someone know in confidence in the business and keep a personal record of your encounters and how you felt

Re: Unhealthy attachments

Would you consider asking him straight out about the perceive special treatment, overly friendly behaviours @Bonniebear ?

I'm glad to hear you have set some boundaries so you are not alone with him.

Please take care. I'm not sure if 1800RESPECT can give you any hinters.

Re: Unhealthy attachments

I think he would gaslight me. I think he would deny everything. He never puts anything in writing, its all verbal. He is in a very high standing. He mentions his wife in alot of conversations as if to remind me I cant have him.

Hes about to do my yearly review and approve a course I want to do. And he has the power to get rid of me.

Consider what's important to you @Bonniebear . Look after yourself.

I'm reading some warning signs, but I don't want to make any assumptions. Only you know best.
