Schema therapy group

Schema therapy group

I recently started attending a schema therapy group for eating disorders. I had previously done some schema therapy work with my old psychologist (who is now one of the group facilitators) and it was something that really resonated with me. When this course was offered to me I jumped at the chance of continuing the work that I started and hopefully getting some positive results from it.

I have a BPD diagnosis, so I think that’s why schema therapy really resonates with me because it talks about having different parts to ourselves.

This group runs for 25 weeks, so a huge commitment, and we are at week 4 this week just gone. @tyme has been real keen to hear about it and suggested a start a thread. I’d like to hopefully take those that are interesting along for the ride. Share what I learn in a way that helps me remember what I learn and keep it in my head.

cause we are at week 4, we have done a lot of basic foundational work. We did questionnaires to work out what our schemas are and what our main modes are. But here is a website that explains the basics and it’s not too much of a read here

I’ll also try and add some more info over the coming days too.

Gosh @Bow so many of the schemas look familiar, I can identify.

Well done on embarking on the therapy and many thanks for sharing.

Re: Schema therapy group

Thanks for sharing all of this @Bow! I hope it's already helping you to consolidate your learnings 😊

I did Schema Therapy only briefly, but I popped up as having the 'Defective' schema as my main one, with a bit of Failure, Enmeshment, and Dependence for good measure. Can be super confronting to get to know our schemas! But understanding oneself is the first step towards healing hey.

Looking forward to the next lot!

Re: Schema therapy group

Social isolation is my top on @Jynx followed by defectiveness, dependence, enmeshment and mistrust.

@Bow it's great you ate sharing what your learning.

Defectiveness and self deprivation are my top ones. I can't remember the rest.

A lot of mine are about control and needing to find my place in the world amongst my neruodiveregncy and my traumas.

Re: Schema therapy group

This is amazing @Bow ! Thanks so much for sharing.

I have a question: "When these needs are not meet in our childhood, that’s when we tend to develop schemas"

Don't we all have schemas? However, it's the 'unhelpful' schemas that develop when our childhood needs are not met?

I'm learning. I only know surface level info. I really appreciate you sharing this.

Re: Schema therapy group

Yes @tyme it is when our needs are not met as a child, that we develop schemas.

Schemas generally develop in childhood, but not always, sometimes they come about later in life.

When those 5 basic core needs (connection, mutuality, reciprocity, flow and autonomy). When these needs are not met, schemas develop that lead to unhealthy life patterns. The 18 schemas are grouped into these 5 categories, that correspond to specific emotional needs. Coping Styles refer to the ways a child adapts to damaging childhood experiences. For example, some surrender to their schemas; some find ways to block out or escape from pain; while others fight back or overcompensate.

The 18 schemas are broken into 5 broad developmental components of a child core development.

Re: Schema therapy group

Super! Makes sense now from the breakdown. The key word was 'Maladaptive' schemas. Because from what I know, schema is a set of beliefs and the way things are seen. Hence, there are helpful schemas also, but what Schema therapy is targeting are the Unhelpful/Maladaptive Schemas.

Thanks for clarifying @Bow !
