Does anyone else want to learn everything and save the world?  or is it just me.

Does anyone else want to learn everything and save the world?  or is it just me.

Does anyone else want to learn everything and save the world? or is it just me.

I was recently reading about bipolar and came across this description of mania:

"Initially, he was tired all the time but soon his energy level “took off.” His friends described him as “crazy hyper,” and he was eventually hospitalized after breaking into a local library, allegedly to “learn everything in those books.” When admitted to the hospital, he was told he was having a manic episode.

This was so familiar to me.

When I become interested in something, or take on a new job or project, I often push myself very hard and become tired, or on edge. I invest everything.

After a few weeks or months of this, I get the sense I'm going to make a 'break through' or that I'm on the cutting edge of something profound.

I have SO many tabs open, books, and notebooks out... comparing and analysing to 'learn everything in those books' like the example above.

I've never broken into a library, but I do have strong memories of visiting a shelter of some kind late at night, and having the police called after taking a bunch of books off their shelf and skimming them frenetically for ideas/knowledge.

I'd been studying mostly independently for months - biology/chemistry and philosophy, and become overwhelmed with it all and had been drinking. (I'd also been learning the alphabet backwards and other orders [1,3,2,4], [1,4,2,3], etc, and solving rubiks cubes, while walking backwards on a balance beam - I called it 'multiple mind training).

I ran, of course... hid in the bushes while they looked for me.

Not my finest moment... but holy hell... that was so similar to the experience in the description.

I LIKE this stuff... except the drinking. It frustrates me that this isn't normal. I feel like the world is standing still.

I feel like this forum, psychiatry/psychology, and much of the world, is stagnant and oppressive.

Isn't wanting to 'learn everything in those books' a GOOD thing?

I don't want to lose the intensity and motivation to learn and grow. Sure, the overwhelm and drinking aren't ideal... so some tempering of the approach is needed, but surely that's all, right?

edit:

Here are some other phrases that I've read recently that I can closely relate to:

"I have a secret I can’t tell you, but it is so explosive it will expose the world for what it really is and I will be seen as the savior of us all."

"I was a man on a mission — a divine mission," Arsenault said. "I had to start a spiritual revolution to save the world."

"And unless people were with me on my quest to save the world, they were against me."

“I can save the world! No, I am a coward.” <--- this one hits home especially hard :'(

"When depressed, all obstacles will destroy me." —Kafka

"When manic, I can destroy everything." — Balzac

"Bipolar people are powerful machines, sometimes they feel they can save the world with their energy, other times they fall deep into depression."

@KirSa_EnigmA honestly 'multiple mind training' sounds like something they'd teach at a magic school, I actually love that concept!

Just reflecting on your words, and thought I'd share my thoughts. Honestly, I absolutely agree that wanting to learn as much as possible, to grow, improve, nurture our curiosity, is a very good thing!

The social narrative is that manic behaviour is not normal and needs to be subdued/treated/made to go away. But I think your personal narrative is what matters more - outside of potentially getting arrested for tresspassing, do you find that this attribute has a negative impact on your life? Like maybe you end up burning yourself out quicker if you're always throwing 110% of yourself into everything you do. Maybe it interferes with your relationships when instead of meeting a friend, you decide you need to watch this 2 hour youtube video about the life cycle of moths. Maybe it makes it harder to keep down a job because filing is never going to be as interesting as a wikipedia rabbit hole about black holes and dark matter.

But maybe not! Maybe you're able to find balance, to ride the rollercoaster and know how not to throw up after, cos you've been riding it a lonnng time.

I think the social narrative about mental disorders is also inaccurate. To me it almost feels like the categories and symptoms are presented like an instruction manual, like 'oh if you experience xyz you're mentally ill no matter what, cos you're not like us. But when I was at uni we learned that someone is considered to have a disorder when their 'symptoms' negatively impact multiple domains of functioning (e.g. work, home, relationships, identity, etc.). So like, you could have all the symptoms of bipolar, but if it isn't causing drastic or irreperable damage to your inner and outer world, then do you really need to change yourself, or your life, to check some box that says 'yep I'm normal too look at me go!'

This is YOUR journey. Don't let anyone tell you that to heal, you have to lose your sparkle. Just my two cents 😉

@Jynx you can learn more about it here: http://www.rexresearch.com/kahne/kahne.htm

Quite a remarkable individual.

I really like your take on what matters most makes sense. I think the social narrative and the 'professional' narrative both lean towards medicating to control the behaviours of those who lie outside of the norm.

Black holes and dark matter are way cooler than filing! Moths, not so much... but evolutionary biology is super interesting... especially abiogenesis! (Or panspermia! From SPACE!)

Did we evolve consciousness, or did we discover it through the development of language and complex societal pressures?

Yes, I do enjoy the rabbit holes 🙂

Does it cause a problem? Sure. Sometimes! But is it the thirst for understanding that's the problem? As you say, it's unlikely.

I struggle with the observation that there are so few people excited about learning/growing/discovering things. As kids, we used to LOVE to discover stuff! But now, it's all 'filing' and other boring day-to-day crap.

I'm FRUSTRATED by it, and them.

I honestly think there's got to be a tipping point... a critical mass that can be achieved where enough humans 'get it' and we just explode (good 'knowledge' explode, not bad 'ka-boom!' explode ha!) into awareness and we ACTUALLY start to advance as a species. Together!

But ffs that's not gonna happen while we're watching people fall off swings and do prank farts in 10 second videos for hours a day.

We live in the most advanced moment in human history ever... right NOW!

... and we're watching Friends re-runs and complaining about the economy.

OMFG.

Where's the sense of wonder gone?

Well... it's certainly not there when I 'take my meds" lol

I mean, even the solution isn't a solution... it's just a handbrake that stops everything good as well. These people don't have a clue. (Or is that just a convenient symptom?)

Oh, I ranted again. oops 🙂

Evolution is an interesting thing. I look at what we have evolved from and there's good and bad. I enjoyed reading your posts. It's good to stop and evaluate. For me right now it's stopping me from thinking of stuff that's happened to me and how much my life has had to change from my childhood to now. I was only thinking before logging in, I don't really think I know myself anymore. I get glimpses of parts Ive blocked out. I try to put the pieces back together. So I guess in away I'm working on learning everything I can about me! And that's not to be taken lightly. I'm saving my world. 🌎 Beautiful as the world is. It's so diverse. I want to be amazing, I want my children to look at the night sky and know how tiny we are in the whole situation. But I do believe we are of course all part of this world. Which is so important!

Re: Does anyone else want to learn everything and save the world?  or is it just me.

Knowledge of yourself is a key component of knowledge of anything. Indeed, we are part of the universe, too!

I give you this:

While you may be small and insignificant in terms of size when compared to the vastness of space, you have within you something no other entity to exist has ever had...

Introspective consciousness.

You are aware, of being aware.

What Carl Sagan poetically referred to as: "The universe observing itself"

This is far from insignificant in terms of your experience.

Your experience of the world is not only completely unique to you, but you have the capacity to consider it critically.

With that comes chioce, and values, and influence, and desire...

All the good stuff!

So, while you may be small, and sometimes feel insignificant or alone in all of this, just remember:

You have within you the power to understand and control the 'The Universe'

...within the scope of your understanding and reach.

'Your Universe' - if you like.

We're not 'Gods' - yet.

But we're as close to it as you'll find on Earth.

So explore... learn... grow... reach... and discover what you can do... like children in a playground... like everything is new and exciting.

Most of all... remeber to stop every now and then to look, feel, and enjoy what an absolutely unique and profound experience it is to be alive and know it.

The odds are actually astronomical.

But perhaps, so is your potential. 😉

All the best,

~ K
