Not fitting in

Not fitting in

Hi I am having so trouble finding professional/workers that understand ED and mental health,

What do you do when you’re trying to get support but you don’t kind of fit in the categories? Where do you go from there?
How do you get the support?

👋🏼 Hello @hope25 Welcome to the forum. You wrote a good post, with a good question.

I don’t have any advice, I sure someone else will have a better answer than me.

I eagerly look forward to reading that post.

Re: Not fitting in

Hi @hope25

welcome to the forums.

I can relate to your struggles. I too have an ED and other complex mh issues and I have really struggled to find supports that understand my ED. EDs are so complex and complicated and it’s such a shame that more mh workers don’t have any training at all in them considering how many Australians have them.

When I first sort help for my ED I had 2 seperate gps be totally dismissive of me, which really put me off seeking any further help. But I was then very fortunate enough to try a different gp and she has been so amazing. She saw me as a human, she wanted to help and seemed to know who else might be able to help. She referred me to an amazing dietitian, a psychiatrist who just happened to be top in the field of ED treatment. Community mh then eventually picked me up and there support has been a bit hit and miss, but it’s been ok.

Have you reached out to the butterfly foundation? They have a database of health professionals who are trained/experienced in EDs. They can also provide you with resources to give to your supports on how to better support you.

Yes I call the butterfly foundation only issue is you can only talk to then 2 times a week which is better than nothing but trying to find a gp where I live that bulk bills is really hard as they all seem to charge privately and I just can’t afford that I have a community mental health health but as you said they are a hit and miss most of the time.

Re: Not fitting in

Yeah it’s sucks that they limit you to 2 contacts a week @hope25 I’ve certainly struggled with that at times when it was my only point of support that actually understood. I haven’t actually reached out to them for a while now, but they can also be hard to connect with- they are busy!

Yep, gps that bulk bill are hard to come by now days. Do you have a concession card?

are you a patient of community mh? And have a case manager or anything?

Re: Not fitting in

@hope25 A lot of gps will bulk bill if you have a concession card.
Is your case manager knowledgeable with EDs?

Re: Not fitting in

Sadly she doesn’t understand ED enough to help and there no one else in the teams dose either.
