Something’s not right

Vent: I just want the right treatment

Vent: I just want the right treatment

I’m diagnosed with cptsd but I strongly believe I have comorbid adhd and Bpd as well. The symptoms and causes are so similar but I just feel like trauma therapy isn’t doing all the work. I don’t know if it’s worth even pursuing comorbid diagnoses, it’s so expensive, and my trusted doctor said she feels like she’s doing harm if she prescribed adhd meds to adults as the research is inconclusive.

I feel like In a few more generations there will be so much more research and treatments available for complex trauma. I hate having to rely on alternative therapies and diagnoses that don’t hit the mark. It’s like those affected the worst in society are left in the dust. Why on earth has psychology up until this point thought those who experienced extreme childhood trauma would be just like, fine? Is it not obvious that we’d need treatment? That it would affect our brain development? That it would affect our ability to have stable relationships? That it would cause inheritable traits due to our body’s survival adaptations? Like did you think we’d step out of a childhood that damaging and just like, trust the society that allowed it to happen? Why on earth would I have any other point of view, any other body reactions, any other personality traits? Complex trauma seems logical to me and yet the research isn’t there yet.

I know it’ll get better, it already has in the 6 years I’ve sought treatment. But it’s exhausting and I’m angry. Just give me the right diagnosis, the right treatment and the right support and I guarantee you I’d smash life right outta the park.

Re: Vent: I just want the right treatment

I love how you put it @swift1 in that you'll smash life outta the park!

I feel that's me.

I was diagnosed with biploar, and after taking meds for years, I was told I didn't have bipolar and it was purely bpd with cptsd. Duh? No wonder the meds didn't help!

Long story short, I had depression and anxiety too. Once these were under control with meds, I could then focus on therapy for my BPD.

It WAS hard work. I was exhausting. I'm not going to lie. I don't think it necessarily needed a name/label/diagnosis to work with the things that were hindering my functioning. However, getting the BPD diagnosis was sorta liberating in that there was a name for what I was experiencing.

Now, like you said, I'm totally kicking goals and life is smashing. Yet it doesn't take away how hard it was to maintain the lifelong changes that were needed for me to get to where I am today.

If you can continue to work with whatever you want to change, I wonder if it's enough for you to fly?

Or, alternatively, have you told your psych that you just want clarity and a clear diagnosis so you can get on with life?

Re: Vent: I just want the right treatment

Thank you! I reached out to my psych about diagnosis because of your comment and she gave me a clear route to take for both ADHD and BPD. I had no idea that psychologists could diagnosis BPD. I’m now putting a hold on the trauma therapy and starting DBT group work while my medication stabilises. And I’m going to shop around for a psychiatrist to do the ADHD/ASD assessment.

Thanks again. I haven’t met anyone with CPTSD who has done active recovery before. I don’t feel so alone now.
