I caught a viral infection not that long ago and have been feeling pretty down in terms of my mental health ever since. I think the infection has cleared, still coughing though, it’s probably just going to take time for it to clear. I’m still feeling really miserable and I haven’t been this miserable for a while. Rumination has been bad and I guess I have a tendency of bottling up emotions. Even the smallest thing can add to the anxiety I’m already feeling

Post viral depression is miserable @creative_writer ... hope you're looking after yourself to get over it quicker.

@Dimity depression after illness is real. Today is the first time in a long time I’ve wondered whether I should take a PRN before things get worse since they haven’t been picking up lately. I also can’t afford to take time off from uni, I took some time off when I felt feverish and really bad. The brain fog persists and is real. When you can’t concentrate, frustration along with it

Yes @creative_writer it's very real and I do sympathise. I used to get flu vaccinations years before I was otherwise eligible because I'd suffered post viral depression. I hope you've been able to cope with assessment tasks and exams the last few weeks, or that you've been able to ask for special consideration. It must be very stressful and upsetting for you.

@Dimity I think it’s wise getting flu shots. I had mine from uni earlier this year. We were able to get free flu shots due to placement. I’m on placement right now, so it’s learning on the job. We have tasks to do for uni too, but those are during placement times. It does free up my time outside of those times. That’s one of the reasons why it was hard to take much time off. We have set hours to do

Re: Post-sickness struggle with mental health
@creative_writer my old gp used to tell me to get plenty of sleep so my immune system could catch up. The flu, RSV and COVID trifecta have made me more vigilant and I've avoided infection but some people I know have been quite ill lately.
Hopefully it will pass soon for you. When I'm peaky I look to fresh fruit & veg and fresh air - dunno if it makes a difference but at least I feel virtuous.
Take care.

@Dimity I am honestly a big germaphobe but still end up sick. I know you do need exposure to a certain extent for immunity.
Diet and fresh air can make a huge difference. I’m lucky I live in one of the outer-suburb since the air is clear. It does mean I’m far away from everything though
