New diagnosis - schizoaffective bipolar type

New diagnosis - schizoaffective bipolar type

According to my clinical psychologist, this is my diagnosis. I still qualify for the criteria of schizophrenia but also have bipolar too. I never knew. I didn't know I experience mania (I honestly never thought I had manic episodes). Sure I have periods where I require little sleep, get irritable and cranky because things are moving at my required pace and I am far from depressed during these peroids, but I thought this was just normal being happy. Depression I definitely know because it is crushing blackness which overwhelms me (like it is currently). When I am depressed, everything even getting out of bed or looking after my basic needs is an enormous effort. Other times, I feel like I could conquer and divide, but I wouldn't say I'm manic... maybe I have a lack of insight then? I just don't know.

However my clinical psych has been working with my psychiatrist over the past few months and this is what they've come up with.

God help me!

@Ayesha thanks for sharing. I hope to get to the stage where I can classify myself as truly well also @Kurra.

It is as hot as Hades here today. The sun has gone down but it is still a ghastly 33 degrees inside the house! We washed the dogs this afternoon and kept cool under the hose with the animals.

We've got the same temperature here @Queenie! Not nice at all. We're still waiting for the sea breeze but it looks as if there may be a storm coming our way from the south west. Fingers crossed. Hugzzz 💕 🎶

I hope you got your storm @Kurra. There is nothing on the horizon here. Supposed to get a storm tomorrow though, so here's hoping for cooler weather.

Hi @Ayesha and @Queenie,

Do you take a mood stabiliser?

Also have you found that you become extremely anxious very easily?

Re: New diagnosis - schizoaffective bipolar type

@Kurra I take an antipsychotic which also acts as a mood stabiliser. It's a fairly new medication I think.

Yes I can become anxious very very easily. I have a lot of nervous twitches.

Re: New diagnosis - schizoaffective bipolar type

I did too @Queenie but my pdoc only believes it's necessary to take the antipsychotic during periods of psychosis but I have taken a mood stabiliser for many years.

The thing that really changed my level of wellness was when I realised that I have a real problem with anxiety. The GP put me on an SSRI antidepressant that is especially effective for anxiety.

The change in me within 4 days of starting the medication was and is nothing short of miraculous. Something to talk to the doc about and think about perhaps.

Keep on swimming. Hugzzz 💕 🎶

Re: New diagnosis - schizoaffective bipolar type

I have schizoaffective depressive type, but I was told that I needed to stay on the antipsychotics to prevent relapses as it's primarily a psychotic illness?
I also take a mood stabiliser and an antidepressant.
@Kurra, what else do you think made you *well*. Was it a different type of med, or therapy, or lifestyle change?
I got the impression from my doc I had this for life. I'm desperate not to get sick again. It's destroying my life.

Re: New diagnosis - schizoaffective bipolar type

@Kurra and @Former-Member I was told I would have to take antipsychotics for life also, in order to prevent another full blown psychotic episode. I was on a medication which required regular blood testing to prevent problems with my blood count, and while it worked well for psychosis, it sent my physical body into shutdown (I ended up in coronary care). I have to be so careful with medications that I can and can't take due to allergies and interolances.

I take a total of 3 antipsychotics (one of which is used as a mood stabiliser in bipolar patients) and an antidepressant. It's a combination and a half but it works well for me I guess.

@Kurra I'd also like to know, was medication the key or was there a combination of therapy, lifestyle choices and meds that brought about your wellness?

I've recently started regular meditation (or at least an attempt at regular meditation depending on voices and other hallucinations which make it difficult to concentrate). So far it is helping a bit too. I got this meditation app on my phone so it's simple.

Re: New diagnosis - schizoaffective bipolar type

Hi @Queenie @Former-Member
Medication has been a key factor and I've been on a significant number of different mixes consistently for 26 years.

Therapy, self awareness and good personal insight have also helped enormously. Over the last 2 years I've made some major lifestyle changes.

All food is prepared from scratch as my grandparents would have cooked. Smaller but well balanced meals and not eating between meals. Lots of water but umh ...lots of coffee too and lots and lots of fast walking
In fact I'm now starting to jog a bit as well.

Grim determination to lead as normal a life as possible. In other words, the more I don't want to do something the more important it is that I force myself to do it. Say I don't want to go to work :

The only thing I have to do is get out of bed.

Then the only thing I have to do is put on clean clothes and deodorant. The shower doesn't matter if I can't manage it.

Get in the car and drive to work.

Walk into the building and go to my desk.

Then the last thing I have to do is stay at work for 5 mins + 5 mins + 5 mins. All the rest follows on from there and work actually happens.

Mind you I am incredibly strict with myself because if I don't achieve the above, I will crucify (figuratively) for the next week or so.

The final component has been the addition of the ssri I mentioned previously that has reduced my anxiety levels to normal worry that anyone mi or not will experience from time to time.

PS: My vulnerability for this mi will always be there so I do have to continueto be very vigilant for any very early signs of change.

Well it's worked for me but I've also put in a lot of very hard work and deveoped my own strategies.

Luv n Hugzzz 💕 🎶

Thanks for your reply @Kurra!
What kind of therapy did you do, out of interest?
