Peer Group Chat// Strengths in the Spotlight // Thursday 6th June 2024, 7-8:30PM AEST

On Thursday 6th June 2024, we will be holding a Peer Group Chat on the topic of Strengths in the Spotlight.

When we find ourselves in a place of struggle, we (and others) can be tempted to look at everything that is ‘wrong’. However, let’s look deeper into this and shed light on what it is to use a strengths-based approach.

The event start times across Australia are below:

This is currently held in Australian Eastern Standard hours:

WA: 5pm

NT: 6:30pm

SA: 6:30pm

QLD: 7pm

NSW, ACT, VIC & TAS: 7pm

For anyone unfamiliar with Peer Group Chats, each focuses on a specific topic and is guided by Peer Workers with lived experience of mental health issues and recovery, &/or caring for someone with complex mental health. A counsellor is also present as a moderator to help ensure a safe environment for individuals and the group. It is a space for us as peers to share our stories and experiences, and connect with those who are going through something similar.

Peer Group Chats are hosted outside of the forums, using a platform called Chatwee. To join an Online Peer Group Chat, you will need to register for an account with Chatwee. On the night, follow this link and log in to your Chatwee account before the group starts.

Please see this FAQ for any questions you may have. For any issues on the night, please message the moderator of the group on the Chat platform. If you'd like to receive a reminder closer to the event, please support this post & we'll keep you updated.

Q3: In what ways do you think using a strengths-based approach can be useful in mental health recovery?

Q4: In what ways do you think using a strengths-based approach can be unhelpful in mental health recovery?

Q5: What can support people to adopt a strengths-based approach in their own recovery?

Q6: If you are feeling very low, what can you tell yourself to help you focus on your strengths?

Q7: Next time you find yourself focussing on your deficits, what is something you could do differently?

I wish I was there @tyme. I actually have answers to the questions.

I think the VIA survey is great to help find your strengths when you don’t think you have any. But I’m too stupid to be able to add the link. Are you able to? Please? I just think it’s a really helpful tool.

@Captain24 that VIA survey sounds like a good thing. What does VIA stand for?

I don’t know what it stands for @Glisten. Try googling VIA free survey. It is well worth doing.

These are the list of strengths: https://www.viacharacter.org/character-strengths

This is the link to do the quiz to find out your strengths. Mine was wisdom, leadership and I can't remember the third: https://www.viacharacter.org/account/register

You need to register though. It is free of cost.

@Captain24 @Glisten @Shaz51 @Sophiavicky1224

This is a personality test: https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test

I found it very accurate.

@Captain24 , you're not dumb or stupid to add a link. It's hard on the phone.... very hard!

Mine were honesty, kindness, humble, empathy and perseverance. When I did it for the meeting I had to do it for we focused on the top 5. I am really happy with them and do feel that it’s accurate.

I’m doing the survey now and I burst out laughing when it asked me if I get distracted easily ✅ I have lots of energy ✅

@Captain24 Thank you for posting and I agree with @tyme links are difficult to post on a phone.

@tyme I’m sure my anti-anxiety medication is making me depressed. I’m really struggling today. I’ll make an appointment with my GP as soon as possible.

Juggling meds can be tricky @Glisten . One may make you go up, another down, and another round and round. It took a long time for me to find the 'right' concoction.

That's why we are here for each other 🙂 We all have out down moments, but we can cheer each other on. That's our strength in being together here on the forums.

@ArraDreaming , it's a LONG quiz... good luck with getting to the end!

The 16personalities test is pretty spot on and awesome. I've done it more than 10 times over many years and EVERY time it comes out the same result. I'm going to do it again tonight and see what I get. I found it was very insightful to know what I'm good at based on my personality.
