BPD and constant suffering

BPD and constant suffering

Hi, so I was in a relationship of 10 years, throughout that relationship I suffered from severe eating disorders and panic disorders, was in and out of hospital. My ex-girlfriend stuck by my side but I treated her poorly, I would talk to other people, send nudes, receive nudes. I am not sure why I did it, it was like I always needed a back up person in case she ever decided to leave me, it is horrible, I know. But I could not stop myself. We got together very young and were much similar people when we got together but as we got older she didn't want kids or marriage, I did. Things like that, she also was very addicted to weed and would throw extreme tantrums if she ran out, which cost us a lot of money.

I have been diagnosed with BPD so I guess that kind of explains why I was scared of being alone so much and wanting back up but it does not excuse how horrible I was/am. Over the last few years I have gotten much better with my panic disorder and eating disorder meanwhile my ex girlfriend's mental health got worse, she had developed chronic pain and depression, I know a lot of it was due to me but she definitely got worse when COVID hit and she couldn't leave the house during lockdown, she kind of never recovered after that.

Anyway, I was being my usual horrible self and we were going 6 months at a time without sex, sometimes longer, then we would have sex, once, maybe twice and then nothing again for up to 6 months. I started talking to other women and eventually I went on a holiday by myself overseas and cheated on her. It was absolutely horrible that I did it. I feel so bad every day, it's all I think about.

Anyway, I am in a new relationship, I love her, I want kids with her, but I still miss my ex so much and want her back, we message and send memes every day, nothing sexual, never say i love you or talk about being back together. It is legit like we are just best friends, which we were before we got together. But my current girlfriend worships me for some reason and I love her. I feel like I love them both and then I have the history and nostalgia of my ex and I think back on the fun we had early on in our relationship even if we were miserable the last few years of it. I think back on how much I miss watching tv or playing video games with her. Sometimes, I feel like the only way out of this is suicide. Just because, I don't want to be without her, but I don't want to leave my current girlfriend as I know I will be happier with her in the future, she wants all the same things as me. But, I don't know. All I think about every day is that suicide is the only way out of this for me. To end all of this suffering I have caused.

I have contacted psychs but I don't live anywhere near them and once they hear I am BPD they say im too high risk to treat via telehealth, so I am kind of stuck.

EDIT: I want to add I am not trying to garner any sympathy, this is more venting and whatever else. I know I am the bad person

Hey @PurpleMonkey, thank you for sharing your experiences here on the Forums!

Relationships can be challenging, and it can be easier to look back and see how we could have done things differently. We tend to do things in the moment at times and regret that later, it's part of being human I have come to realise.

It's great that you have moved onto a new relationship which is more fulfilling and also maintaining a friendship with your ex-partner. These situations can be challenging to navigate, and you sound like you are doing a good job.

I just want to check in with you about your thoughts of suicide and whether you reach out at all when you are feeling like this. It can be important to talk about how we are feeling in the moment, and this provides an opportunity to keep safe when experiencing overwhelming thoughts. Have you called Lifeline or Suicide Call Back Service when you have these thoughts? I will also list some numbers below, so you have them handy:

Lifeline: 13 11 14 or Lifeline Chat

Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636 or Beyond Blue Webchat

1800 RESPECT: 1800 737 732, www.1800respect.org.au

Suicide call back service: 1300 659 467 or Online Counselling

If in immediate danger: 000 www.triplezero.gov.au/triple-zero/How-to-Call-000

Sane counsellors are available via phone, web chat or email from 10am to 8pm Monday to Friday (AEST/AEDT). 1800 187 263 Counselling

It sounds like you have been going through this for some time and you are demonstrating your resilience and strength sharing it here with the community. It is really brave to share opening and I encourage you to continue to reach out to your peers here on the Forums.

Take care

Re: BPD and constant suffering

Hey. Thank you so much. I mean. I have an overwhelming feeling that I should commit suicide but I wouldn’t do it. Mainly because I am afraid but also because I don’t want to upset my family.

I have called lifeline in the past and unfortunately it was a bad experience the person seemed quite condescending. So I have been too afraid to try again. I also am afraid to say to them I feel suicidal because I don’t want an ambulance or police turning up at my house when I have no plans to do it and I just wanted to vent.

Hey @PurpleMonkey ,

I hear you loud and clear. Because of my BPD, I was always suicidal.

Things are so much better now, but the thoughts are still there. I've been told that these thoughts are chronic. I'm okay with them now. It's not as though I plan to act on them.

What do you find helps you manage day to day?

@tyme
Honestly not much helps me. I sit in the house all day because I just am too mentally exhausted to do anything. I used to love going places but now I feel sad even when I am out doing stuff with friends. Generally I talk to my gf on FaceTime or listen to music and sometimes play puzzle games on my phone.

What helped you with your BPD if you don’t mind me asking?

Re: BPD and constant suffering

I was very very unwell with my BPD. I had many many hospital admissions because of my suicidality. I ended up getting case managed, and from there, I was admitted to Victoria's BPD specialist clinic, completed MBT treatment, and voila! I was sick of being sick all the time. I hated myself and I hated life.

It was hard work with the therapy. It was working to change how I was used to thinking, so that unhelpful thinking was replaced with helpful. It was actively working to change thinking patterns.

But it worked.

Also, in my area, we have prevention and recovery centres. These were a godsend to me. I stayed anywhere between 2-6 weeks, and it made a huge difference.

Nowadays, I'm really grateful for my BPD because I reckon I'm a better person because of it.

However, I will not deny the fact that it was a bloody hard journey.

I'm really glad you reached out here and have given me the opportunity to share @PurpleMonkey
