Talking through trauma and PTSD

PTSD

PTSD

Hi I’m new here and my story is long. I’ve suffered from nausea and stomach pain for nearly 3 years. I have gone down the path of many Doctors and specialists and still I’m sick to my stomach. Yesterday I finally excepted I have PTSD and anxiety a fact I’ve been told many times. I had a trauma which involved me having food (piece meat ) stuck in my windpipe, it was in there for 25 hours as I live in the country and the hospital was 1 hour away. The doctor at this hospital was very angry I went there and consequently I was left there in a room for 6 hours foaming from the mouth. As no ambulance was available I called my husband who now was 2 hours away, he picked me up and took me to the city which took another 2 hours. The whole time I was in a lot pain, could not swallow and saliva pouring g from my mouth . The awful doctor did organise an emergency operation so I was saved but the stress was horrendous. About 6 months after that I started feeling sick, and virtually for next 2 1/2 years I’ve had panic attacks and feel sick all the time. I constantly go to hospitals and doctors and think something is wrong. I cry most days and I just can’t move on. I have a psychologist and lots care and take an antidepressant but I’m still crap. Yesterday my daughter told me her little girl had to go to hospital after she got a cut on her head and she had to see the same doctor that I had to see!! and bang I had a panic attack ) just from getting told that )I now finally know my problems are in my head. I just want my life back. I’m 64 have a wonderful family and I’m stuck

@Former-Member

yes indeed those are very valuable experiences that give credence to the idea that somatic therapies can help to move memories of trauma and emotional energy stuck in the mind-body complex.

a real impact of regular yoga practice is to gradually/gently shift these energies and clear the blocked energy channels of the body through postures, breath, relaxation and meditation.

thank you for sharing!

@Moonlake

That is great to hear! I also feel empowered when I am proactive about my own health and wellbeing. Finding what resonates with you where you are right now... is so important.

Even researching videos that provide help to stimulate the Vagus nerve on Youtube can help. The Vagus nerve is directly connected to your digestion and all other organs of the body, so regulating the nervous system can help to bring things back into balance.

The books recommended by @Former-Member are very good and will help you to understand how the mind and body are connected in trauma responses. Dr Stephan Porges proposed the Polyvagal Theory many years ago and this theory provides a way to understand how the nervous system reacts to stress and the impact that has on our perceptions of safety. His books can be technical but are well worth reading.

Good luck in finding some answers.

Hey there @Moonlake 🌺🙂

my Pologies for the delay in reply 🙂

I hope the books are helpful - I think reading other stories including experiences and recovery can be helpful in putting our own experiences into come kind of context, which then can lead to understanding and how to start on recovery.
And learning about functional anatomy in brain and body can really help with knowing the how and why or our physical and emotional responses 🌺🙂

It’s so great you’re here on the forums - there’s so many helpful threads and resources, which I hope help bring a sense of community and positivity to your days 🤗💜🌺

Re: PTSD

@Former-Member hi I’m back I haven’t read the books yet as I have been in hospital as my daughter in law got me an appointment with her doctor in Adelaide and was admitted to follow through with lots specialists. I was in 5 days and not once did I have stomach pain or nausea. I’ve been out 1 day and I’m back as sick as a dog. They have been looking at my meds and maybe gluten intolerance. I was totally gluten free while in there so I thought that was it but today I’m back thinking I’m mentally sick as I don’t think I’ve had gluten. My husband who’s endured this with me was actually angry with me this morning as he thinks I should have stayed in hospital. He’s gone fof the day and I’ve got to say who would want yo hang around me who’s always sick. I ordered your books online and apparently they have arrived so that’s something to look forward to reading when I get home. I just wish this nausea would leave me alone, today I think it’s all my fault

Re: PTSD

Hey @Moonlake ,

I'm sorry to hear how unwell you have been feeling. I hope you feel better soon.

I also hope the nauseous feeling leaves you. It is understandable that you may be feeling quite yuck at the moment.

At the same time, it's great to hear from you.

Are you just going to rest up for the rest of the day?

Re: PTSD

@tyme yes I’m resting drinking peppermint tea to ease the stomach! It’s quite hard excepting this physical stuff can be my mind. I was so fit and well in hospital first time in 2 1/2 years that I’d strung actually 6 days together without being nauseas, I think I’m suffering disappointment today. I didn’t sleep in hospital either and I still wasn’t sick., it’s just not making sense why I’m ill today.
