Dissociation
Does anyone know what dissociation is? I've been in a state where I'm there but not really there (if that makes sense) and I'm not sure if this is dissociation. And why do people do it.

@Former-Member. A book that you like sounds like a great idea - I've been unable to read anything enjoyable in a long time, just work correspondence (emails) & reports.
I walked around to my neighbour's house (she invited me over) this afternoon, does that count?
At least our conversation (catch-up) helped to ground me, with a sense of connection - after being dissociated for most of the weekend.
We only recently got in contact for the first time, & I hadn't seen her for a few months.
It all started with the back (adjoining) fence falling down, & needing replacing. Then we've invited each other over (a few times) since then.

Does anyone dissocciate where they feel themselves slipping away like they can't stay awake, like they're drowning and then can't remember what has happened for a few hours?
I think I'm dissociating a lot. I have a lot of memory blanks.
The whole thought of this happening is scaring me a lot.
Where am I when this happens? Who am I? What do I do when this happens?
Just the thought that I'm not me. It scares me as much as going psychotic again does.

@Former-MemberYes very good questions. I do have amnesia (caused by dissociation) that leaves me unable to remember a large part of my life (almost several decades).
As for dissociating in the present - I experience it as severe fatigue, a numbness of mind, & an inability to think cleary even about small things. Usually it last only hours, sometimes for days (or weeks).
Telling the difference (distinction) between dissociation & physical fatigue is difficult for me - because I also have moderate to severe physical fatigue (every day), caused by sleep apnea (not dissociation).
I understand that when some people have short-term recent gaps in memory - it can be due to "different dissociated personalities" (alters), which is Dissociative Identity Disorder. As far as I know I don't have that (DID), so I'm not an expert on it.
