Shoulder to Shoulder: Veterans

Introduction

Introduction

Hi,

I served in the Army for 21/2 years between 1988 and 1991. I was put out medically when I was diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder. I enjoyed some parts of my service whilst other parts were definitely not fun. Overall, I am proud that I was able to serve my Country. I am always very early to everything and I hate to wait but I guess my service made me focus on being punctual.

Re: Introduction

thanks for this insight @RugbyAFL. What do you think will be important for an organisation like SANE then to meaningfully engage with Veterans in the development of this trial space? Would that include partnership links within the space? A Veteran's lived experience governance model? Keen to hear more of your thoughts and others on this topic @Oaktree @AllAboutMissy

@RachSANECEO

If they were not First Nations roles I would jump at the opportunity.

Re: Introduction

more than one role available - committee goal is at least one First Nations member, so the other spot is general lived experience and I've designed the committee to ensure structurally its not just a group of lived experience advocates but must be actual members of SANE community/participants in our community forums or programs. Put an application in! come hang virtually with the LEAC 🙂 its a great group

Re: Introduction

@Oaktree I am writing a tender (due tomorrow) for some proper investment that if we are successful will mean we can design and build a veterans forum properly. I wondered if you would be able to give me a short testimonial about what sane forums mean to you / outcomes you get (as a veteran) out of the saneforums generally?

Re: Introduction

ditto @TAB not sure if you are still in this group hub but I would love a testimonial on what saneforums have offered you, or the outcomes or benefits you get that I could use to put into this tender I am writing for a grant to build a veteran forum for real.

Re: Introduction

Hi @RachSANECEO

thats a bit no notice,I see what I can come up with though.

Sane in general helps me get through the day .

I feel for others in similar or more exacerbated situations than mine.

I like to know someone is thinking of me sometimes.

Like a fair few others on here , I live alone. Sane fills some pretty big gaps.

It can also give me perspective and I can learn from others' experiences.

It can be someone to talk to.

it can be the only reliable, non judgemental, friendly, understanding thing in the World.

as for 'veterans' thing:

I guess I ticked a box somewhere that got me into this.

I dont always see myself as defined by my experiences from 40 years ago, good or bad.

I dont really see myself as a 'veteran' I did not fight or go overseas. I joined RSL hoping to find common ground, or get help. thats not happening.

I have a family member who is still serving who keeps me informed on DVA things and I have registered with them

I have a White Card for psych, which is the least they give anyone. I am yet to find anyone who would accept it, ie let me see a psych then DVA pays in their own sweet time. so that has gone nowhere either.

prob repeating myself now, but in the last couple years I have come to realise what a mistake it was for me to join the ADF and seriously think someone should have stopped me from doing it.

Hi @RachSANECEO

I will email you a testimonial in the next couple of hours. Need to figure out what to say. Would love to help SANE get funding. It has been helpful to me over the years.
