CPTSP/BPD or undiagnosed ADHD?

CPTSP/BPD or undiagnosed ADHD?

Hello, I’m brand new to SANE and this forum, this being my first ever post.

i apologise if this subject has been covered already in previous discussions. While I did have a light dive into previous posts, it was all a bit too much and right now I’m quite in need of connecting with peers on this matter.

I want to start by saying, I have worked in MH and disabilty for decades, I am very well informed and have excellent insight into my well-being. I’ve participated in 20+ years of therapy and was prescribed SSRIs for 10 years which did not stop my having depressive episodes, but did make me numb, obese and led to other health issues. SSRIs damaged my physical health and self esteem, which is quite depressing!

I’ve recently been on a convoluted journey to seek an ADHD assessment with a clinical psychiatrist. That journey has been Re-traumatising. Long waits, last minute cancellations by providers, feeling coerced, gaslight, haemorrhaging money, my preference for female clinician being steamrolled…

Finally I had an appt with a male clinical psychiatrist, who accepted the ADHD assessment referral. I was experiencing heightened emotions on the day due being forced to change clinicians at the last minute, (the same clinic had also cancelled the psychology appt scheduled for the following week) and I was very emotional during the session. The clinician led the discussion by asking questions. I don’t believe my answers were completely accurate or just a reflection of my state in that moment. After 20 minutes, the clinician put up his hand, said, “I’m going to cut you off there, I think you have CPTSP and BPD.”

Excuse me?! What about the ADHD assessment that I’m here for?! He went on to inform me that would be done by one of their psychologists, for $2-3000 100% put of pocket and then if I needed actual treatment I’d go back to him at $500/session.

i had not even had the opportunity to discuss ADHD traits, his questions all being related to past traumas etc.

I feel gaslight and I refuse to accept these “diagnoses” until I’ve had the opportunity to have the ADHD assessment I have requested. Quite frankly the “diagnoses” feel like a cop out. “Every one and their dog thinks they have ADHD these days…” That’s right, and a vast majority of them are women. BPD was added to the DSM the same year Hysteria was removed from the DSM. Coincidence?

yes there’s been trauma, but is that a result of undiagnosed ADHD, dopamine seeking behaviours and cycles of burnt out from the exertion of masking and over compensating?
As a consumer, I should be able to access the service I request, to be the one driving this journey, and at least given the opportunity to be heard.

Are there any other women out there who have experienced / are experiencing similar? I’m keen to connect with you.

@lavenderhaze @Thanks for your thoughtful reply.
I do believe that a vast number of women have been misdiagnosed, ignored and/or gaslight for both mental and physical health issues, due to a male-centric approach to western medicine.
One example of many: Countless women died unnecessarily from heart attacks before they conceded the symptoms are different for women.
ASD and ADHD/ADD can and often do present very differently in females and I believe this is why we are seeing an influx of newly diagnosed individuals. It’s not a fad, or a trend, this is peoples lives and suffering a stake.

I wholeheartedly reject the implication going around that the influx of people seeking ADHD/ADD diagnosis is just a grab at accessing stimulant medication. If it works, it works! No one battered an eye lid when I was prescribed SSRIs, even though they were well known to cause weight gain, brain fog, loss of libido, and lovely things like eye sight deterioration. ADHD medications have their own stigma attached.

Thank you @8ppleTree. As hard as this is, I’m not giving up. I may have to step away from the journey to bolster myself, but I’m determined to find the right support.

As a matter of fact, I did go to that session with everything written down, however he steered the direction of the appt with his questions and cut me off before I was able to get to the ADHD/ADD traits and challenges I’d carefully prepared. He also seemed to ignore the purpose of the referral (for an ADHD ax). It wasn’t right or fair. It felt like a money grab to me.

@tymeThank you

Ive allowed myself several weeks to recover and learn from that experience, which has been helpful, and am feeling considerably better. The loss of agency experienced was definitely injurious and I’ve recognised that I need to protect myself from that moving forward.

@Doldip15 that sounds like a nightmare, my heart goes out to you, your grandchild and daughter, and family.
I can’t help but feel half the diagnoses people are given are just a cop out by lazy/ill-informed clinicians. But this is not like receiving a bad meal a restaurant, it’s peoples lives, and sadly can be injurious.

Hello @AaaaahBlaaaaah

Have you succeeded in making any progress for you?
I think of you!

my daughter and grandson were pulled over by the police when my daughter was driving my car home and my grandson’s behaviour can be obnoxious at best, which always leaves him at risk with the police who refuse to understand disabilities like ASD and ADHD and BiPolar! And teaching my grandson socially acceptable behaviour has failed altogether unfortunately! Did a whole program at one one of the universities- I took him weekly- and he passed with flying colours as they say! But he thought the skills he learnt were for the group- not for the outside world! Never tried applying them to school, home anywhere- except the group! Wasted effort that was! And he always tried to tell me he wasn’t literal! Luckily I never argued the point! Just accepted that indeed this person is very literal!
when I minded him once and took him to the park to play, he wouldn’t leave and it was getting dark! I called out “I’m not waiting till the cows come home”. I had his instant attention! He came running! “You have cows Grandma” “Can we go see them?” How to explain sayings to a preschooler? Who’s literal? Where were those cows?

Just the beginning of learning that communication with someone with ASD was not only different but for someone without, challenging? He’s 18 now and it’s been a long road!

I really hope you find a positive path!
some of the universities have clinics! Is it worth logging onto to their sites and checking what clinics they offer in the area around where you live?
