Overwhelmed

Overwhelmed

Hi Guys,

I recently came on here to talk about whats happened to me in the last 2 weeks.

But I'm getting to the super overwhelmed stage, where i dont know what i want or where i want to be.

I've been given an opportunity to be part of a band that will be performing at a private function with about 150 people. I will be singing. But i am packing myself. I just dont have enough confidence and its people that arent ur average people.

I usually say yes to this kind of stuff and so the people that have asked me r just expecting me to do (including my family).

But im so so scared, i dont feel good enough for it 😭but i dont want to let anyone down by saying no.

Any suggestions on what i should do?

Life feels like its crashing down on me at the moment. 😖

Now I'm getting very excited for you, and you have to tell us how it went. You know you have got this. Let the music take you to that feel good place.

Still smiling over your decision 🙂

Re: Overwhelmed

I can here why you would be feeling overwhelmed with the opportunity. @Pem

Do you think your audience will know you are scared and anxious? Most likely not.

Fake it till you make it?? Will that work.

Hugs to you. I believe in you

Re: Overwhelmed

Hey there @Pem 🙂

Im really sorry for the delay in reply - I had a hiccup in my health that had a ripple effect...

Anyhow, I wanted to kindly ask how youre going?

I hope the upcoming gig is working its way into a perspective that is becoming more user-friendly for you 🙂

One thing I used to do when I knew I would be facing an overwhelming task in front of people (quite important, decisive people), I would try to put it into perspective, aligning it with other stuff I had done/achieved/made it through successfully that carried more significance or weight, and then also reminding myself that even though the people I was having to be in front of, they were still people with an expectation, which was my words, and not really interested in me per se - they just wanted to see what I was going to do/say, without any other significant opinion on me as a person (after all, they didn't know me personally)...

I would frame it so I could then see it with a bit more objectivity, and then be less focussed on how it actually was making me feel, if that makes sense?

I hope that is helpful in some way for you 🙂 🙂

Re: Overwhelmed

Hey @Pem I just wanted to check in to see how you are doing.

Are you feeling more confident regarding the gig?

I love the advice put out by @Former-Member. It's sometimes really hard to feel 'worthy' of the recognition or praise others give us, while at the same time remembering that the way others perceive us doesn't define who we are.

I know it's sometimes called imposter syndrome, but I feel like that term can be a bit stigmatising. Nonetheless, there's a couple of really useful exercises which have helped me put things in perspective in the past including the cognitive triangle (explained well here https://hudsontherapygroup.com/blog/cognitive-triangle) and the RAIN midfulness exercise (https://www.mindful.org/tara-brach-rain-mindfulness-practice/). Both of these have helped me gain perspective on the thing I'm feeling anxious about. But these might not work for everyone, as everyone learns and copes with mental health distress differently.

Whether or not you use these strategies, I hope you're being kind to yourself, and reach out when and if you need 💛
