Germs, mess and anxiety

Germs, mess and anxiety

I'm really struggling. I can't stop myself from stressing and getting overly anxious about germs and mess. It's causing huge issues in my marriage. I just can't stop myself. Every little spill, a few crumbs, cat hairs, or slightly dirty shoes can often tip me over the edge and I need to clean it immediately. If my husband doesn't do something neatly or clean his messes up immediately, I struggle to stop my anxiety from bubbling up, and I'll either clean up after him (and can't stop myself getting annoyed while doing it), telling him to do (or not to do) things that I think are common sense, or if I'm really in a high state of anxiety, which is every day now, I yell, mainly because I feel he's not listening to me or always forgetting things. I know it's wrong and if I want things done to my standards then I have to do it myself. I just can't seem to keep those standards up when I get so fatigued all the time (I don't even have a job or kids, which is embarrassing). I find myself feeling the need to disinfect anything my husband has touched with dirty hands, asking (well maybe more demanding) him to clean his feet before getting into bed, disinfecting our phones every day, it's just exhausting. I have become so high strung (my husband's words) that I don't even feel like I know how to relax anymore. If a piece of clothing falls on the ground, i need to re wash it, if we have sat somewhere outside of the house, we can't sit on the couch, because it'll send me into a panic, if my husband doesn't wash his hands before touching anything in the kitchen, it'll send me into a sort of rage. I raise my voice all the time because I'm panicked and then I'll feel so guilty I can't stop crying. It's destroying me and my marriage. Even now while I'm writing this, I feel my entire body is so tense and my mind is so fatigued. I don't know what to do.

Re: Germs, mess and anxiety

What I found with my anxiety is that when I'm feeling that I'm stressed and out of control, it makes me want to control my environment more even though I know I ultimately I can't beat my environment @Undecided

Hope that makes sense. That is, the less control I have, the more I feel I want to gain control.

Hi there,

Firstly, everything you feel is valid. I am so sorry that this straining behaviour and thought pattern taxes you and your body day after day. It’s not embarrassing, you have every reason to feel drained please don’t undermine your feelings 🙂

I think you have a mental health care plan as you mentioned the rebate so I am proud of you for reaching out. The fees are something that hold me back too as it can be unaffordable for most people’s budgets with the rising costs of living etc.

I cannot imagine the pain and discomfort you feel dealing with these compulsions and please know that there are valid reasons why you feel this way.

im so sorry that your husband has made you feel like you’re at fault for this, that isn’t the environment you need right now. Definitely continue to express how you need support for this, and establish boundaries for the both of you to work through this together and help you feel less stressed along the way.

betterhelp is an online therapy service that offers payment plans and exceptions for lower fees to let you change therapists as many times as you want until it’s right for you.

you are valid, you are heard, you are seen. You are doing great, please don’t be too harsh on yourself and maybe try using skills and techniques to keep your feelings less invasive where possible?

you do what’s best for you, and keep seeking help. Some programs online may be free, and you can always find support in your friends 😊

Everything Jackson3 said is true, you are not overreacting, I had to read your post twice. There is an ick factor with your husband. I dont know if flo or flo travel will help with his nose "obsession". It seems he has a compulsive disorder himself.

Re: Germs, mess and anxiety

@Former-MemberWith all due respect I saw my mother slowly die of covid in rehab I will not repost the details you can find it in my profile. The covid conscious community on twitter (which is made up of experts) helped keep me safe by providing information while I was navigating the hospital system for 2.5 months ALONE with NO HELP FROM EFFING ANYONE. My N95 and co2 monitor saved me from the worst possible outcome. I am immunocompromised due to a genetic condition. Not everyone is equal in a pandemic. Saneforums sent me an email asking me to delete my original post or replace it with a science backed (peer reviewed) source so I left the links which now are "Marxist". You mentioned in your post covid is like the flu and is no big deal, and is fearmongering yet Sane did not ask you to back it up with evidence. Great double standards there @moderator

I witnessed what a collapsing hospital system looks like (caused by a lack of mitigation of transmission of a level 3 pathogen). I predicted what was going to happen to my mum. My critical thinking abilities are perfectly fine.

I am out of here.
