D.I.D....

D.I.D....

Wanting to know if there's anyone else in this group caring for someone with D.I.D.?

We've got a family member with a very "crowded" internal world of multiple personalities. This goes along with compulsive behaviours, phobias, social anxiety, derealisation and other difficulties. The person in question sees medical and psychological practitioners regularly; it's a disorder that apparently doesn't respond to medication, and they have previously reacted badly to medications that have been trialled; I'm seeing a psychologist regularly myself to deal with the pressure and get some feedback/backup. I have a supportive husband and family, but otherwise it's hard to know how to or who to talk with about what's going on. It's an uncommon enough disorder that you have to explain an awful lot about it before a conversation can even really start, and then you run into dangerous ground regarding the privacy of the person in question.

Hi @Former-Member (and @Determined @Faith-and-Hope @Shaz51 @outlander ).

Just back home last night. It's been a rough week. The expected surgery went ahead during the week, with Mum's agreement. Any other option would have left her in severe pain and risk of imminent death. While we won't have her forever, far better if the last stretch isn't too horrible.

She was in a bad way with severe pain after the surgery, but once they got that under control, she started looking much more her normal self. I extended my stay there by a few days to make sure that she was continuing to recover. Not sure when she'll be discharged back to the aged care home. Will be heading back there next weekend with Hubby, sister and Younger Daughter for a visit that was planned months ago... but will be well timed. If Mum isn't back in the home by then, she may well be discharged during our visit, and it would be good to be around for that.

The hard thing of we can't always be there when they'd want us to, but we try to be there for the times when it really matters.

Heading up to Mum and Dad's part of the world again tomorrow. The aged care home has, understandably, recommended caution when visiting, if there's any chance you might have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus.

Hubby and I both have mild cold symptoms... so has Younger Daughter. We're pretty confident it's not "The Virus"- I've had a scratchy throat for nearly two weeks, so that in itself almost confirms that it's "just a cold", and a very mild one at that. But to play it safe, Hubby and Younger Daughter will stay home, and it'll just be myself and my sister traveling up. She's had holidays booked for months so that she could do this visit, and can't simply put it off for a few weeks... plus by then, I wouldn't be surprised if the home is in full lockdown. She's well enough, so should be able to visit them, they might say "no" to me, but even if they do, it's not a trip she should have to do on her own. So even if I'm just traveling and "at home" company for her but can't see Mum and Dad, that counts for something.

There's the added background niggle that Mum and Dad are smack bang in the highest risk category. I would not be surprised if it's a few months before we're able to visit them again, if what's been happening overseas is any indicator, and who knows what might happen in that time. Am very glad we both went there together a few weeks ago, and that I was able to be there for Mum's surgery.
