D.I.D....

D.I.D....

Wanting to know if there's anyone else in this group caring for someone with D.I.D.?

We've got a family member with a very "crowded" internal world of multiple personalities. This goes along with compulsive behaviours, phobias, social anxiety, derealisation and other difficulties. The person in question sees medical and psychological practitioners regularly; it's a disorder that apparently doesn't respond to medication, and they have previously reacted badly to medications that have been trialled; I'm seeing a psychologist regularly myself to deal with the pressure and get some feedback/backup. I have a supportive husband and family, but otherwise it's hard to know how to or who to talk with about what's going on. It's an uncommon enough disorder that you have to explain an awful lot about it before a conversation can even really start, and then you run into dangerous ground regarding the privacy of the person in question.

Re: Dissociative Identity Disorder Carers?

Hi @Smc

Trust you are able to get some R&R in this weekend.

Hi @Former-Member, weekend's still going for us. There's some mutual skill sharing on this morning (plus a longer race that our family's not particpating in), and a few more sports events this afternoon. Younger Daughter and Younger Son both won a few ribbons in the sprint, novelty and relay style races. It's a beachside locale, so we used a free afternoon yesterday to wander in the shallows (brr cold but fun) and look at shells, jellyfish, starfish...

Got a minor injury yesterday- I'd brought with roller skates, because some of the event venues have suitable skating areas, and the organisers are reasonably relaxed about a little bit of "off program" activity happening, but I managed to fall backward with my thumb between me and a hard place, and did a minor dislocation. All back in its proper place now, and looks like I've come off lightly. It'll be bruised under the dressing I put on to immobiise it, but I don't think anything worse. I was fine without painkillers last night, so that's promising.

But am still very concerned about Older Daughter. She's in a very low state, and at this rate possibly won't be safe to discharge from the psych ward today. Have spoken with her on the phone every day. and also touched base with her assigned nurse a couple of times over comments that I thought were important to pass on to them. Blunt simple truth- we need her to find a reason to want to stay alive. She feels like it's all too impossibly hard at the moment, and I don't quite know how to counter that, because we've seen things slowly but steadily getting worse over time. We need her to "turn a corner" and start heading back up agan. 😞

Mum still in hospital too, so have been phoning her. Her doctors think her leg's improved somewhat, but sounds like there's still a way to go before the infection's all clear.

Kind of lurking at the moment. Older Daughter's review is happening this afternoon, to decide if she goes home or stays in the psych unit a bit longer. She's not sure which she prefers. Wants to be home, doesn't yet feel secure with herself. Similar mixed feelings here.

We're going to attend at least part of the review session. Given the unhelpful history we've had with local mental health, I don't know what will come out of it. I have a feeling they may be reluctant to acknowledge that they've left us unsupported in times of real crisis. But hoping praying that we can start making some headway. They're not willing to work with the private psychologist daughter has been seeing (or any private mental health workers) so if she wants local help onside, she can't access the ongoing help she's been getting.

Very tired. If I come across as mentally competent during the meeting it will be a literal miracle.

Home again... I think it went well?

She's got a case manager for a bit, a lady who's worked with her previously. We were able to talk with this lady about the inconsistent and sometimes dismissive or otherwise unhelpful response we've gotten from the local mental health unit. She's offered a few helpful suggestions in that regard. Psychiatrist seemed reasonably helpful, but within the constraints of a system set up for crisis management, not ongoing care. Which means I'm still puzzled as to why they won't work with the psychiatrist providing the ongoing care?

So Older Daughter's back home, can't guarantee she's 100% safe, but it sounds like better backup is going to be put in place.
