lived experience

Hi everyone,

I thought I should break the ice and be the first to post in this topic.

It can be tough disclosing lived experience of mental illness, even on a forum designed specifically for it! I have experienced depression and anxiety for around 10 years, and am happy to be a part of this trial phase.

Nice to meet you all 🙂

Hi Blue-bird,

Good on you for being brave enough to post - I will post my own experience soon when I can figure out how all this works.

Re: lived experience

Hi blue-bird. Thanks for a great post. You are so right when you say "it can be tough". There are so many reasons why people are reluctant to disclose or talk about their mental health. My own history of mental health is bi - polar disorder type 2 and anxiety disorder.

Just like you I am very much looking forward to hearing other peoples storie and helping to develop this new forum.

Cheers

Harry

Re: lived experience

I put in a post as well. Im looking forward to speaking on the forum. Where I live there are very few mental health services or organisation,so talking to similar people will mbe good.

Re: work

Hi everyone,
Yes it can be difficult to discuss lived experience. My last depressive episode occurred at work so there was no hiding the issue. I have been back at work for a few months now ( I was off work for three months) . It has been a tough road but slowly I believe my colleagues now finally realise I have an illness and have been more understanding .

Hi everyone. Looking forward to being part of this group.
I'm trying to learn how to talk about my depression and anxiety, so thought it will surely be easier with people who understand!

Nice to have you aboard Ma

I'd be interested to hear more about what made your return to work a success, when it would have been very easy not to return.

Re: work

Hi everyone, really hoping this forum will help to deal with all the complex issues dealing with the death of a child and the family unit.. I had moderate Post natal depression with my first and only child and then two and half years ago my son was killed in a car crash, so really battling to stay on top and not slide back down that slippery slope of depression. My husband is not doing well at all(talks about ending it all constantly) and it is a battle to keep myself up and positive let alone prop him up as well. We lost the same child, but our journeys are so very different.

Speaking of work, my work has been so understanding and has been my sanity. It give me somewhere to go everyday and concentrate on something concrete.

To Ma60, glad your colleagues are starting to be more understanding. That really helps to get through the day in a more caring environment.

Re: lived experience

Hi everyone,

I'm struggling with bipolar 2 on a daily basis - mainly the depression which is so debilitating. Getting out of bed is a struggle much less making it to work. How do you manage it?
