Warning : Sexual Abuse Discussion

Warning : Sexual Abuse Discussion

*please do not read if you feel vulnerable or feel like this subject is too much for u rn. Each of us perfect wherever we are in our recovery.

hello All,

This is deeply personal post for me. I wanted to share because I believe there are many other survivors, who may feel supported by me expressing, & survivors who may be further in their journey of recovery than me, & can offer support to me.

I titled it, as, a discussion, because, to me - it is most important to feel like it is ok to have a space where talking, expression, is safe, normal, accepted.

My story, or timeline, for me, happened like this.

*Majority of my life, complete denial

* Accepting, that yes, moments of sexual abuse definately occurred, - tho, it was in the past. I had no interest in "watching the movie' as I expressed to previous psychologist

* Now - I am aware. Yes, it did happen. It continued to happen as part of my storyline, because, the decisions I was making were from a place of, inability to accept.

Today, I am having 'dark thoughts '. Memories. How it impacted my decisions.

I feel sad. I feel like it's ok to be sad. I was used. Abused. Unseen. Un-human.

Unseen. I think that is how I continue to see myself. It is difficult to describe.

Yes. There is still a disconnect, a disassociation. As though, that happened to another, not me.

Sexuality with trust, love, kindness - or a fling, if that is your thing - is the most beautiful blessing. I feel silly writing, tho, it is a religious experience! Spiritual. The highest connectedness, to life, the universe. Maybe this, connectedness is not exclusive to actual physical act of sex. I am trying to express the profound beauty.

Not dirty. Not rude. Not shameful. Not ugly or embarrassing.

It annoys me, that our culture, tv, advertising..... Everything! Has manipulated our views of sexuality, to be giggled at, or their are 'guidlines' Sorry, it is Extremely difficult to express what I'm saying.

Sexual Abuse, changed me. It made me feel wrong. I believed others could take away from me. Therefore I felt like I was in bondage with devil, in sense.

A person took away the part of me that was private, sacred, unknown to me. I believed, if they had that power over me, I was nothing. I felt the deepest sense of humiliation. It was a secret. I didn't know if they knew how humiliated I was. I thought, "I am frightened" -

It is so difficult to explain - the power that a perpetrator has over their victim.

If I left - I would have to accept the horror of the fact, that I had been raped. It was, still is - too much for my psyche.

If I stayed, I could 'sweep it under the rug'.

If this is what life was - what was the point in trying to leave anyway?

Sexual Abuse, is a particular form of abuse. It has layers that entangle, confuse, imprison the victim. I was, still am, a prison to myself.

It is difficult issue to discuss. It difficult issue to listen to.

I think this might be part of problem.

Our society, all around the world, finds it very difficult to talk openly.

I think, victims, are 'undertreated'. It appears to be taboo to discuss a sexual assault, with people, other than with a counsellor, or professional. Outside of this, it is still 'kept secret '

Guilt. Shame.

"I have a story that is bad.

I have a story that is too sad, too damaging, to share with general public.

General public are not capable, intelligent, responsible, mature enough to discuss over Christmas or at get together, BBQ. These topics, are reserved to specialised team."

The people who work in this area, truly are inspiring, beautiful. I feel in awe.

Stigma.

I think it is more than that.

I'm not sure if I'm alone in my thinking - tho it appears like victims & survivors of sexual abuse, torture, violence - we are in a specialised category.

(Kind of 'the too hard basket' - that might only be my perception)

It's like, we are deemed, unable to recover, in a way. That the psyche & other professionals work on the basis, that all we are capable of is building strength upon trauma filled experiences. That we can be strong again. We can become - survivors.

Rape is literally the essence of the soul stolen.

And from that, (what has been taken) - professionals, guide us to building a new version of ourselves.

Scars that never go away.

'The Scarred'

And this is my life, I have to accept, going forward.

I am part, of "that group'

The 'Me Too' movement never sat quite right with me. Although, it was healing.

I also recall watching the Bill Cosby & Michael Jackson documentaries.

To listen to other survivors. It is, very healing for me. I am not alone. People I admire. It happened to them too. Celebrities, powerful, .... Heartbreakingly vulnerable. Taken advantage of in the cruelest way.

When, 'me Too' happened. I felt like it had an undertone of 'special group'. This could all be my confused thinking.

I think I prefer the term 'lived experience.'

I am a victim. I am a survivor.

I have lived experience of generational & life long trauma.

I am damaged. I am broken.

The me that was always there.

IMPOSSIBLE to be taken away.

That is mine. No one can take it.

I can be tricked, manipulated, hurt, heart broken in a million pieces, soul taken away.

Idk, maybe the soul is regenerative?

@StanD

Agreed that you probably need more intensive support than you are currently getting. Hopefully your coordinator can arrange more NDIS help for you...certainly won't hurt to have the discussion

Re: Warning : Sexual Abuse Discussion

Hello @StanD

I am struggling with how to respond. This is your experience. Your trauma.

My trauma will not allow me to respond differently.

I feel angry, hurt and so much more reading about what you have endured.

My words just cannot come close to appease violation of any living being.

This should never, never happen to anyone.

This is your discussion most definitely. You certainly do have every right to have a safe space to talk.

You have taken the first step in creating a space for people to respond should they feel comfortable.

Some people cannot accept what has happened. This also must be respected.

Fear - flight

Please do not measure your pain and your worth by the number of people who reply here.

Please also have support in place to help you as other feelings and thoughts arise.

I hope that this helps you firstly as you write to help reduce stigma.

Always remember that stigma is generated from ignorance. You are not ignorant.

@StuF has given you strong support.

@StanD Your wondering about the soul, possibly being able to regenerate.

I think that you have already begun the process of yours.

Be proud and stay safe. You have inner strength. That is very real. You are you StanD.

I only hope that I have not said too much.

Hi @StanD

I read your post yesterday when you first posted it. But I did not know how to respond, and I still don’t.

It’s a really vulnerable time for me at the moment, another trauma anniversary approaching for me. So I don’t really have many words to share, but I wanted to make sure that you were as ok as you can be. Wanted you to know that you have been seen and heard. That you are NOT alone, even though it can be a really lonely journey to be on. Sometimes people will not know what to say other than… I know.
Im really sorry that this is your truth. It’s never ok. It never will be ok. Please be kind to yourself. Be gentle. And give yourself time.

Re: Warning : Sexual Abuse Discussion

Thankyou so very much @Bow & @Sophia1

Your compassion & kindness are lights so bright, I honestly cannot see.

I can feel though.

I want to read your replies again, next year!

I would like to respond in a way that is meaningful to me.

You don't know the gift you have all given me.

It is 11.40pm as I write this. After this I will sign off for the night.

What you have given me - to the end this year. I feel full. It was not there before.

I think it's love.

I want to say more. 11.43 now. I can hear fireworks everywhere, as I lay here in my unfamiliar home. I have been so fortunate this year. I have a home now. A real home. You all helped me to get here .

Thankyou,

God Bless.

Thankyou for giving me the best end to this year x

Re: Warning : Sexual Abuse Discussion

Hello @NatureLover @Bow @StuF (thankyou so much for checking in on me- I missed that post, I'm actually sleeping better than I have before, tho it comes & goes thankyou) @Sophia1

Thankyou all, from the bottom of my heart for responding.

These are the words, I never heard my entire life.

I know everything you say is 100% truth. I have always known.

Now - digesting, absorbing the words from others, it is a depth of healing, I didn't expect.

I started this discussion to freely talk .... now I am feeling, lost for words.

All of your support & advice, & apologies, all your words - I am reading each one with intent.

@Sophia1 you express yourself so clearly. You didn't say too much. I don't think it's possible.

Your feelings are valid. This is for you to @Bow & I appreciate your comfort so much, when I can feel in your words, that this is also a dark time for you. I am sending you my strength.

I think @Sophia1 raises a really good point.

We can only speak from our own experiences.

Each of us on here ... out in the world, We All have our own traumas.

(Reminds me of phrase : None of us gets out of here alive! Sorry, that might be dark humour, forgive my silly 🧠)

Oh gosh - I completely lost my train of thought now - hang on ....

No, one person's trauma, is bigger, or worse, than another. It is all relative (I hope I'm using the right wording) We cannot compare our own hurts with another's. We cannot dismiss the magnitude of our own experiences, on the basis, that somebody else, might be doing it tougher.

We are diverse & connected.

We are our own person & we are one, together.

Thankyou for your apology @NatureLover you didn't need to. I see, you chose, you wanted to. Thankyou for choosing me.

⬆️ This is an example of what I am trying to express. How can I possibly put into words, that, a beautiful soul, whom, I do not know (debatable!) CHOOSES to give part of their own 24 hours to me.

And it's not like, 'hey, how you going' energy.

I can honestly only describe it as love.

I was not expecting to feel this sense of validation.

It is not, the dominant part of me (I hope that makes sense - expressing is so difficult at times) - I didn't know - I could grow,. Like this.

Thus, I am slightly lost for words right now.

@Sophia1 respecting that people cannot discuss this, is brilliant. Thankyou. I didn't think of word, 'respect" you are absolutely correct.

This is where, I need guidance (moderation). I am naturally open person. Always have been. I actually prefer discussions that are not often talked about. I need to build an awareness, & respect, that I am slightly less confined in this area, than the average person.

There is a 'rule' is mental health

" Do not take on another's pain"

Fantastic on paper!

We are humans. We share each other's pain.

We also need people, that are skilled in operating 'robotically' (I didn't know the word to use)

I would rather hear a hard truth, than a million soft lies.

And, again - I am now, reminded, I need to respect a person who feels they need soft, whether it be a half truth, or soft suggestion.

Finally, I think I want people to know, there are things in this life that there are no words for. You articulated that perfectly Sophia.

And - that is ok.

To me, there are no wrong words people can say.

Reading, listening. That is enough.

I never had that.

I am actually shocked at myself for beginning this discussion. I had feelings of regret .... What have I done? Moments. Do I delete?

You say not to measure my worth by the responses I get.

But we do. I think it is natural.

If @StuF had not replied, perhaps I would have been inclined to remove post.

I think it's ok, to need - others.

Perhaps not measure our worth. Or perhaps, that is exactly how our worth is measured?

Now I have confused myself!

I like 2024, so far.

Let's keep this discussion going.

You are all giving me so much strength.

My wish is that each of you, & all those reading today & in the future, will teach one another what it is to be loved, to find strength to go on, beyond circumstances that are soul destroying.

And, maybe - it's ok, to give up too.

I'm not sure what else to say. Yes, this discussion is about me. It doesn't have to be. That was not my initial intention. @Bow please do not hesitate to share your story here, if you choose.

I started this discussion with the intent on also reading others experiences. I know, there is lots I have missed. I can grow, learning about others stories.

I only wanted to state, that yes, this is my story. I would not feel offended, for others to express - only if that is what YOU choose you want to do. Otherwise, I am blessed, to have you all. I AM blessed

Re: Warning : Sexual Abuse Discussion

@StanD

From such a eloquent reply, I wish to quote you, "I think it's ok, to need - others."

I love all that you wrote, but wanted to highlight that part as most resonating with me. It Is ok to need others...unfortunately they are not always there, which is incredibly tough...but...anyway, this post is getting convoluted, sorry. I'll end before I get myself and anyone else confused!

Just wanted to declare solidarity

Re: Warning : Sexual Abuse Discussion

Hello Alll,

I wanted to update & share what I am planning going forward.

I think, it will be worthwhile & best decision, for me, to attend in an intensive trauma therapy, workshop, or whatever I can find.

I have decided, that this week, I will contact my support coordinator & assert my needs.

I don't know all the details, however, I was told that Good Shepard offer a 3 week, or so, course for people with lived experience of Domestic Violence.

I'm not sure exactly what is available. I think this is too big, for me to be expected to unravel only, on my own.

I think it will do me world of good, if I can access professional support, through these next month.

TY

Re: Warning : Sexual Abuse Discussion

Hi @StanD , you write beautifully - from the heart. The most beautiful writing I've ever come across.

I agree with you about what you said about "Don't take on another's pain" - I'm an empath, so I do take on their pain. But we need to be careful about not overloading ourselves. I have learnt here on the forums after burning out in 2020 on here.

I also agree with you about valuing truth over lies.

I'm glad you're sleeping better and are going to access support.
