D & D(eshift!)

D & D(eshift!)

For all the D&D goodies! Tell us about your latest Nat. 20! Or your Crit Fails!

Complain about the inherent lack of enough snacks at the table!

What's your character? And what is their backstory?!

When are you going to run your own campaign? *wink* *wink*

Re: D & D(eshift!)

@Jynx Unfortunately the d4 system is just a labour of love, and has never seen the light of day.

The idea is 1: glancing blow, 2: light wound, 3: serious wound, 4: mortal wound.

A lesser dice d6 has less chance of a mortal wound, and so on.

I've been rolling a d4 and a d6 for ages now as a means of divination. The d4 gives me a 25%, less than 50%, greater than 50% and above 75% and the d6 is more of a roll similar to the properties of numerology. Rolling a 2 with a 2 is below 50% but it's a magic number pattern. A 1 with a 6 is that you will fail, but something positive to come out of the mistake. Etc. A 4 with a 4 is the best roll you can make with a d4 and d6 combo.

But @Jynx you're giving me ideas I had forgotten about encounters and the depths it can reach. I've been lazy maybe lately, or just struggling to find a nice mix of danger and fun. Thanks! I'm inspired!

Re: D & D(eshift!)

Oh that's really cool, I like that a lot @deshift - gonna share with my DMs!

Aww yay, always happy to share inspiration and creativity! And there's also this resource I love, called the Angry GM! Here's some of his stuff:

How to manage combat like a true game master

Angry Guide to A$$ kicking Combats Part 1

And then a bigger list of combat resources

He really is an angry gm so the writing style reflects that lol, but it has been super illuminating!

Re: D & D(eshift!)

@Jynx BOOKMARKED!

I'm a bit angry at my players at the moment. I let them all have a wish, and one player summoned the faction leaders, not knowing there were levels above the NPC's they'd met so far. And they could have all died. I was merciful. But then, the main leader/voice of the party just starts asking me "So how do we take over the factions? What do you think we should do? Tell us how we can win? Whose side do we take?" and he basically just kept repeating himself. I was fairly shocked.

The NPC was like, "You summoned me here, and you ask me that? I'm over 10,000 years old, and I am going back to my mountain top shrine to contemplate meditations like I was doing before I was unwittingly summoned here to save you from the trouble you know nothing about." And then he lifted her holy symbol from her with a super high sleight of hand roll.

They didn't ask any explorative questions about the temple, why the green lady died, what the Redditor cultists want the temple for, etc. So woe will befall the citizens of Toeshold at their lack of interest in the machinations of the 7.

Grrr

Re: D & D(eshift!)

@deshift aww heck! Yeah I've read a multitude of stories of players de-railing the campaign, or trying to bite off more than they could chew!! My DM does try to give us some warning, like 'hey this dwarven blacksmith you're trying to swindle is wearing some pretty gnarly demonic armour, you may not want to cross him' - but I have a player who just loves messing around with as much as they can! The blacksmith let us off with a warning after showing off some scary magic (turns out he was level 20 lol). I can only imagine the frustration for you, having your players neglect the details you put so much work into!

Also reminds me of this meme lol

Re: D & D(eshift!)

@Jynx Yerrp. I'm not normally a vindictive DM, but in this case I'm willing to make an exception.

I'm going to throw some deceit around, and not give off the normal vocal cues I usually do, kind of like scary background music in a movie. It's going to be a Tyler Durden level of deceit. If they are just going to willy nilly go along with whatever I tell them to do, then, I'm going to tell them to do something that might not end out in their best interests.

I'm going to pose as a different faction, or have an internal faction betrayal, something that isolates them, and makes them guilty in the eyes of their friends, even though they haven't explicitly said who their friends are. THEN there will be a battle for all battles, and I really hope someone dies. Normally I hate it when people die, but thems the goal now, and someone is going to be re-rolling.

*sigh*

Maybe it will make it worse, but I'm hoping it will make them accountable for their actions and their attitude towards my world.

(oh, auto-moderator is hating these posts!)

Re: D & D(eshift!)

@deshift haha I mean if you need to get ruthless then go for it! The fact that characters can die and that there are always going to be consequences for player actions is part of what gives the game real tension and proper stakes!
