Distress tolerance

Distress tolerance

I'm trying to gather some more tools and strategies for distress tolerance and trigger management particularly I'm regards to preventing dissociation and switching to maladaptive alters when interacting with services that are deemed a threat to us and my family, I have familiarised myself with grounding techniques and similar tools but have had such a hard time implementing them when also trying to navigate these situations I don't always catch it in time I feel like maybe I have missed some strategies or skill that could help, I know correctly implementing these techniques take practice and time but I am afraid time may not be something I have

Re: Distress tolerance

Hi @Duckie-

I always have something tangible with me when I go to appointments where there is a possibility of me dissociating. Mainly with my psychologist and psychiatrist. Usually it is a rock. I roll it around in my hands, it has a slight pointy end and I press that into my hand.
It doesn’t always work. And I don’t always catch it before it’s too late.

I'm TideisTurning, one of the Peer Support Workers here. You're certainly not alone finding distress tolerance and coping with exposure to triggers challenging. there are a few great ideas here already, but I just wanted to share some wisdom on self soothing from our recent topic Tuesday event here to give you another tool to try in case it might be helpful 😊 wishing you as much strength and courage as may be needed to get through,

TideisTurning 💙
