Increasing frequency of unpleasant memories

Increasing frequency of unpleasant memories

Hi I am experiencing increasing frequency of unpleasant and embarrassing memories. I can experience up to 3 or 4 per minute. The memory could be recent such as from earlier that day or a long forgotten memory from high school.

They are often as simple as recalling myself interrupting someone when they spoke so I’m bombarded with an unpleasant embarrassment that I had acted inappropriately and thus that other person dislikes me and I also feel shame.

Earlier in life such feelings were less frequent such as only once a year but I would become very distressed about such incidents and could feel overwhelmed for an entire day and cry myself to exhaustion.

At present though they are happening at least weekly and often multiple times a day. What is different though is that when an unpleasant memory surfaces I will repeat ‘help me help me help me’ 3 times and then the thought is completely gone. But soon after a completely different memory will emerge in which I again repeat ‘help me, help me, help me’ and then it’s gone also.

How can I stop all these numerous memories from emerging in the first place and creating that strong sense of shame and guilt?

Did anyone else ever repeat a phrase, make humming noise, sing a tune, yell out or tap their head or rock back and forth to help rid unpleasant thoughts? Is there a cure or better approach? Any book or website recommendations? Or does anyone one know research on this topic or correct medical terminology for it?

Re: Increasing frequency of unpleasant memories

Hi and welcome, @CourtneyB , it's good to have you here 🙂

Would you say that these unpleasant and embarrassing memories are "intrusive thoughts"?

I ask because I have OCD and some things you wrote sound similar. OCD has strong intrusive thoughts. Plus I've read a bit about OCD and a component can be shame. Plus the things you wrote about repeating a phrase, tapping the head, yelling out etc sound like OCD to me (I do the "repeating a phrase" thing a lot).

The idea with OCD is that there are strong intrusive thoughts ("obsession") and that the "compulsion" bit is to get rid of them.

Of course, I'm not a doctor...so please consult a doctor. Do you have a trusted GP or psychologist?

An important forum tip is if you type @ and then click on a name in the drop-down box, that person will get a notification and won't miss your reply.

Hi @CourtneyB

Sounds like things are tough for you, glad you found us here at the forums. I'm not sure but I think this factsheet might help... Traumatic events (sane.org)

I use positive self talk, like it's ok, that was in the past, I live in the present moment now. The point of power is in the present moment.

A useful forum tip is press the @ function and a list of names will appear, select the name/s you want to highlight and they will be notified.

Re: Increasing frequency of unpleasant memories

@NatureLover Thankyou for the welcome and sharing your experience.

I’m not sure if it’s intrusive thought or just thoughts of events I regret. Another example is I put something in my jeans pocket and it fell out without me noticing until I got home.

I will discuss with my doctors if it could be OCD.

You also said you’ve read a bit about OCD, can you recommend where I should look to learn more and is there anything that helps in your case.

@Kyle1 Hi Kyle , you mentioned stimming, is there a reputable book or website you recommend to research stimming? Is stimming something you experienced?

@Blackbird11 Thankyou for the link, if you come across any other info I’d be pleased to read it also.

This is something I’ve not really experienced before so I’m hopeful I can overcome it and move beyond this ‘phase’. Maybe I just need to better understand what is going on and develop some new skills.

I’m also aware that I’m dealing with some other MAJOR life concerns and sleep, exercise etc is not the best atm. So I know when these issues are addressed that the frequency of the thoughts may decrease.

@Blackbird11 @Hey thank you for the link. I noticed it mention there is an online resource by ‘This way up’ so I will ask my Doctor if it would be relevant also. Their sleep resource helped me in the past.

I can't remember, sorry @CourtneyB 😣 I've just read little bits here and there over many years.

You could google it? E.g. "sense of shame in OCD" or something?
