Peer Group Chat// Respect // Thursday 16th November 2023, 7-8:30PM AEDT

On Thursday 16th November 2023, we will be holding a Peer Group Chat on the topic of Respect.

Having respect for ourselves and others is a really important prerequisite to being able to be vulnerable and share openly. Let’s come together to talk about our experiences with respect, what respect does and does not look like, and how to healthily build it.

The event start times across Australia are below:

This is currently held in daylight savings hours:

WA: 4pm
NT: 5:30pm

SA: 6:30pm

QLD: 6pm

NSW, ACT, VIC & TAS: 7pm

For anyone unfamiliar with Peer Group Chats, each focuses on a specific topic and is guided by Peer Workers with lived experience of mental health issues and recovery, &/or caring for someone with complex mental health. A counsellor is also present as a moderator to help ensure a safe environment for individuals and the group. It is a space for us as peers to share our stories and experiences, and connect with those who are going through something similar.

Anyone is welcome to join! Tagging some members who may be interested below:

@Former-Member

I really like that diagram. It stops my need to please people.

Re: Peer Group Chat// Respect // Thursday 16th November 2023, 7-8:30PM AEDT

@Former-Member-, thanks so much for sharing! That is a really cool diagram/picture (not entirely sure how to define it best) and an important reminder to focus on what we can control-mainly ourselves. However, something I was reminded of that's important to remember is within our control is that to an extent, we get to choose what behaviour we will and will not accept. Generally, if someone is being disrespectful to us, we do not have to accept or tolerate it. We have the choice to take a stand and say no. Our next Peer Group Chat discussion on Asserting Our Boundaries might explore this a little more if anyone is interested and wants to come along 😊.

That aside/ in the meantime, this video explores how respect might be defined in a few different contexts and might be helpful to consider in defining what respect might mean for each of us individually, on the other hand what disrespect is, and our boundaries in terms of what we will and won't accept. Feel free to share any musings on that if you'd like. On that note, just a little reminder (and also echoing the video a little), especially for anyone who might need to hear it, everyone is deserving and worthy of respect.

I liked that video @TideisTurning it really is helpful to see the posivity towards oneself, and it's empowering to know we're allowed to make choices based on other's behaviour and experiences.
