Something’s not right

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

So, as many of you would know, about a year ago, there was a major research project in to loneliness, and it released a report that was pretty good. Step 1 in the development of a system to solve the problem, you would think.

Then today, I get a notification about an article (https://thiswayup.org.au/the-relationship-between-social-anxiety-and-loneliness/) that supposedly drew upon this loneliness report for it's conclusions... except it so obviously didn't.

The article has the gall to begin with a quote from the report:

“Loneliness is hard and hidden, yet common. It’s a social problem, not an individual one of being alone.”

And then it goes on and on to talk about loneliness as if it's just a problem in the head of the sufferer, and something that the sufferer has to remedy all by themselves by altering their thoughts, feelings and behaviors into something more 'normal'.

The hard-earned research is being ignored. Worse, it's being wildly misrepresented. It's existance is being acknowledged, but it's actual contents is being ignored.

Why do we even bother?

no suprise there @chibam ...

Article writers and editors have long made a sport out of reframing facts to fit this month's agenda...

Give it a few weeks, and you'll see a publication with a completely opposite leaning slant...

How else would they stay so busy??

I know I shouldn't get surprised, but damned fool that I am occasionally I let myself get my hopes up.

Your right though, this should all be anticipated by now.

What hurts though is that this isn't just from cheesy tabloid; this is from a mental health service! These are the people we depend on taking notice of this stuff, and they aren't!

Hey @chibam

It's disheartening to hear of this misrepresentation. Have you reported it to SANE Stigma Watch... StigmaWatch (sane.org)

Might be worth reporting.

I don't know, @Blackbird11 ... The problem isn't so much the article as the belief system behind it. Easy enough for the service to issue a retraction or reword the article in response to an outside complaint, but what about the actual conduct of the service? My bet is that they will continue treating patients in-line with the same views expressed in this article. And if pressed about that, they'll probably respond that they don't have the money/resources to treat the problem as anything more then a problem 'in the patient's head'.
