History hurting my future

History hurting my future

I feel so defeated today 😞 I've been going through family court for some years now where the main focus has been on my mental health and substance abuse, leaving me on the outside of my daughter's life with no say and contact only with supervision.

I've spent the last 18 months working incredibly hard to turn my life around. I achieved a correct diagnosis of ADHD and PTSD, worked hard on gaining qualifications in mental health and spent countless hours researching mental health, emotional intelligence and trauma-to find that a lot of my issues have been from being misdiagnosed, treated with the wrong medications, DV and my own lack of education around emotional intelligence.

I've been told today that despite all of this, I'm still not a good enough because of my history and my own negative childhood experiences impact on my ability to parent 😞 this opinion totally goes against my training in both mental health and peer support-where I use my experiences to help others. I've taken accountability for my past behaviour and have worked hard on it. I know exactly what my child needs emotionally now and in the future, it's just so disheartening to be told I can't see the impact on my child when I can because I've been through similar as a kid 😭

Hi @Ilovepenguins
Hearing that lot is happening 💛
It sounds like you have been on quite a journey, thank you for sharing.

I'm sorry for all the pain this has caused for you. You are enough and I can really recognise how much you have turned your life around. You can recognise what your child needs and I'm sorry that things have not turned out exactly how you hoped for. Is contact supervision sitting okay with you?

Please know we are here for you 💛

Oh @Ilovepenguins this is heartbreaking to read. I am so sorry that this is the road that you have been on.
Is your daughter with her father or in care? I know supervised visits must be so hard and having no say in your daughters life is rough.
I hope your daughter knows…. Or will know in the future how much you have fought for her and how much you have done to turn your life around.

Thank you all so much for the support and kind words ❤️

Thankfully my mum has supervised our time together for the past 5 years and we all have close relationships. I don't need supervision with my other 2 kidlets who're thriving and live with me, so it's very frustrating that we can't all have 'normal' family time together. My son can take her to the playground up the road on his own but I cant?! Makes no practical sense at all.

I can't disclose much about the current situation or proceedings because of the laws, but my daughter is living with my mum now for the time being, one huge step closer to her coming home ❤️

Seeing how negatively mental health is viewed and spoken about in the court systems though, is truly heartbreaking and emphasises how prevalent stigma and stereotyping still is throughout government sectors and psychology and no respect given to peer support and lived experience 🤦🏼‍♀️

Re: History hurting my future

there's a bit I could say on this @Ilovepenguins , and my own story to share which parallels some of your own...

suffice to say for now: it can all look too much like a sick joke. And people like us are bunnies in the headlights, not quite sure whether to laugh or cry or tear down the sky... the heart ices over until atlast it cracks.

It takes tremendous energy to stay human in the midst of all that.

Thoughts and prayers are with you @Ilovepenguins ...

Sorry to hear your story. @Ilovepenguins

I have long believed that the courts are a poor place to manage family disputes, but the lawyers like it. It creates unnecessary adversarial positions. The real issues get swept under the carpet. Talk about escalations. They were a bit slow about starting the mediation set ups ... I am against this system. Favours the rich and the rich get richer.

Yep I know the bunny in the headlights scenario @Kyle1

Take care Apple
