Come and Join Me For Some Reminiscing

Come and Join Me For Some Reminiscing

Hiiiieeee forum fam!

So back a few weeks ago on October 1st, it was International Day for Older Persons. It made me think about my days working at the Older Persons Mental Health Service. I loved the people there and miss them a lot.

They were beautiful souls who often just needed someone to listen to them and hear them. One of the greatest joys was listening to them reminisce about their days as more active members of the community. They would tell me that it might bore me but I assured them that was not the case.

My favourite was an 85 year old man who loved to tell me about when he worked in a printing press and that he was paid 6 pounds a week.

So I thought it might be fun to start a reminiscing thread. You can reminisce on whatever you like! Like a safe space to say 'ah the good old days' and no one will say 'move on'! 😄

I'll start!

I was telling my daughter the other day about when my parents bought their first house. I was about 4 and my baby brother was just a few months old. Our lease was up on our little seaside flat and my parents decided it was time to move into our own house. I still remember looking at the house they bought. There were two older folks living there and they told my mum and dad the house was a bit haunted. And I overheard!

I'll never forget when we moved in and being spooked on windy nights as the branches on the trees outside would brush up against my window. I'd lay in bed and call out to my Dad and say, 'I think there's someone outside, like a ghost'.....And so my anxiety was born lol.

Also, I still remember they paid, $25,000 for that little house. They renovated it to look amazing over the years and are still there today and the house is probably worth about 2 million 😩 🤣

Please tag anyone I've forgotten about who might like to join

Morning @hanami

Remembering lots of memories as I am reading yours

One of mine is

My grandfather used to get one of his many teenage grand sons to mow his lawn each week ( with some mishaps along the way )

Anyway I asked grand dad if I can mow the lawn for him

And he said " you will own this house and yard one day and you can mow "

That has always stuck it my mind

And now I sit here and think 🤔 how did he know !!!

I have 2. @hanami

When I was really little, one Christmas my mum said to me that maybe Santa left something in the backyard. I said ‘no he leaves the presents under the tree’ Mum was adamant that I looked. So dad took me to the back room of the house and open the curtains. I screamed out ‘Santa got us a swing set!’ Mum said that he wouldn’t have. I made her come and look!

The other one that still touches my heart and I still do. One Christmas I asked pop what he wanted for Christmas. He said he wanted a Mars Bar. I said he couldn’t because he was diabetic. He was four needles a day! So Christmas Day I gave him a present. He said it was a Mars bar. I told him how could it be look at the box. He shook it and I said see! He then said I had put stuffing in it. He opened and was right. From that day on I always bought pop a mars bar for Easter, Father’s Day, his birthday and Christmas. He did the same back to me.

When he passed away I put a Mars bar with a bow and put it in his coffin. All my cousins were like, that bloody Mars bar’ To this day I have a mars bar on all the same days plus the anniversary of his passing. It’s my way to honour him and remember him. After he passed I found out I was actually his favourite grandchild. I never knew that and he never showed it. He had 19 grand children.

Also at his funeral one of my cousins read the eulogy and then said now pops second favourite grandchild will now read his favourite poem. (The favourite granddaughter thing was a joke amongst as all) So I got up and said ‘nah his favourite granddaughter will read his favourite poem’ The whole congregation laughed.

My grandmother was Russian. I’m half Russian/Ukrainian. Arriving from China, speaking only the Russian language, she never integrated into the Australian community, the same could be said of my Ukrainian grandfather. But I have so many fond memories of the “chai” she served from a kettle on her stove, generously sweetened with 4 spoonfuls of sugar from her blue, cracked tin sugar pot; cracking macadamia nuts with my grandfather with a brick underneath the cooling canopy of the huge macadamia tree; sharing the watermelon my grandfather had lugged back from the nearby market, (he never drove) giggling as the sweet juice of the fruit dribbled down our chins…One day, after a visit, all her grandchildren ran back to their cars, forgetting to say goodbye, no doubt excited by all the goodies they had received. I looked back up at her, sitting there by herself outside on the verandah where she spent a good part of her days perched on the edge of her chair looking out at the world that existed beyond her front gates…And i ran up those stairs as fast as I could and planted a kiss on those time worn, weathered cheeks. And she smiled. And later I was told, that she was so touched someone had remembered her in that moment…

I'm probably not old enough to be posting here being a millennial, but I remember when you could buy a computer program and only have to pay for it once. Not like these subscriptions! Or remember when you could complete tax using a paper form and didn't have to worry about cyber security and remembering a million passwords... It probably is said by every generation but I reckon life was more simple before technology took over. Maybe it was just being a kid that was simple!
