Something’s not right

Something is not right maybe?

Something is not right maybe?

So I’ve been diagnosed with BPD.

First of all, I’m struggling to get into a DBT program.
From what I can gather, my case is not considered “severe” enough for immediate intake and it’s going to take about 6mth before I can start.

Meanwhile; my partner is attempting to be supportive whilst they are probably struggling with their own (potentially undiagnosed) mental health issues; but I feel like their words and actions are triggering me. We have previously spoken about breaking up and maybe my BPD was talking then, but I can’t shake this feeling that it’s really not meant to be anymore.

To add to all of this stress; my therapist officially discharged me from their care and now I’m kinda just left with no one until (or if) I start a DBT program.

Help?

Hi @J212

Nice to meet you.

Whilst I don't have BPD there are many members on here that do. I do know how hard it is to get into a DBT program. It probably took me about 6 months too.

I'm sorry you can't see your therapist anymore. Can you go to your gp and get a referral to someone else? It still sounds like you could benefit from therapy.

That must be hard on you and your partner going through this. I guess you need to decide what is best for you.

I hope to see you around the forums.

Snowie xoxo

Thanks @Snowie

It seems it’s difficult to find a good therapist. I was referred to some psychiatrists but each one of them are no longer accepting patients.

Was your DBT program online or in person?

Thanks

Re: Something is not right maybe?

@J212 my DBT program was in person. It was through a mental health hospital that also did day programs. I haven't looked into it recently, but I'm sure there are some online courses too.

It's hard to get into a psychiatrist. The waiting list can be long. Plus trying to find someone close to where you live can make it difficult too.

What about a psychologist or have you been down that path before? I know you don't need a referral for them.

Hey @Snowie. My psychologist referred me on and I am having trouble finding someone who is available to handle my therapy needs. I guess it’s just going to be a big waiting game.

It took me quite awhile to get support and gel with my supports too.

Unfortunately with mental health, everything seems to take a long time @J212

Have you got any support from family or friends in the meantime?

Re: Something is not right maybe?

It’s been 10y to get to a diagnosis.
I’m just concerned about my mental health decline the longer I wait.

I have some friends that I can talk to but it’s not the same.

Thanks for your support @Snowie

Re: Something is not right maybe?

That is a long wait @J212 I can understand that concern. It's sad that if something was physically wrong with us we would get in quickly, yet with our mental health it takes so long.

I am the same, I don't talk to any family or friends about my MH.

I do know that Sane offer a guided service. I think you get about 10 phone sessions with someone. I know it is a bit of a wait but it might help. I will tag a @moderator who might be able to point you in the right direction.

For now, please use the forum as much as you need to. The most helpful thing I find about here is that you can talk to people who have been through or are going through similar things to ourselves.

HI @J212

Your situation sounds frustrating and tough. Reach deep within yourself to get the answer about your partner only you know what's right for you. There is some good resources on our factsheet... Borderline personality disorder (BPD) (sane.org) you might find helpful? You are not alone, we're here for you.

Hey @J212

My name is Amber22 and I am a Peer Support Worker here at SANE. It sounds like you would really benefit from some support. If you wanted to check out the Guided Service and refer yourself (and also check if you are in an eligible post code) then you can do that by going through this link.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all 🙂

Re: Something is not right maybe?

Hey @J212 ,

I've been in a similar space. I had BPD for over a decade before I was finally ready and able to get into therapy.

Please know that DBT is not the only treatment for BPD.

I completed MBT (mentalization based therapy) and it had made a remarkable difference to my life.

Other therapies include ACT, schema therapy, narrative therapy etc.

The most helpful part of MBT was the group element. I went into it very anxious and not really wanting group therapy. It was very difficult, but it had the most impact on my recovery.

BPD recovery takes time, but it is certainly very treatable.
