BPD Newbie

BPD Newbie

So I recently got diagnosed with BPD. I was not overly surprised when my therapist read out the text book definition and I matched it word for word.
My fears are now about the unknown next steps. What impact will a DBT programme have on my existing life. Especially given I work a 24/7 shift rotation.
My other worries are around my existing relationship. My partner is trying to be really supporting and reading all the ways they can help me through it but I can’t shake the feeling it’s suspicious and controlling in some way. Is that my BPD talking?

From a therapy point of view it’s wrong to ask and give advice but I’m not sure how else to move ahead mentally from where I am so I can feel confident about getting better.

Thanks

Hi @J212

Great to have you here! I don't have experience with BPD, but can point you to our fact sheet here...Borderline personality disorder (BPD) (sane.org). We also have counselling by any means here... Contact us (sane.org).

Just remember you are a whole person outside of this diagnosis and you are important and loved just as you are. Hope this is useful 😊

Re: BPD Newbie

Hey @J212 ! Thanks for talking my language! I can certainly share my experiences of having BPD.

I also fit the diagnosis to a T.

The thing with BPD is that it affects relationships. Those suspicions sound like a coping mechanism you have developed as a result of something that has happened in the past. Psychotherapy for BPD is about challenging and gradually changing these unhelpful thought patterns - it takes conscious effort to recognise your thought patterns (which you are doing already), and to practice challenging the suspicions etc.

As for work. I had a stressful full time job, but in order to attend therapy on a weekly basis for over 18months, I made the commitment to use a day purely for therapy. I engaged in about 18 months of Mentalisation based therapy - weekly group and individual sessions.

The group sessions were the hardest, but also the most beneficial. I didn't see much change at first, but towards the end of therapy, I could really look back to see the difference.

BPD therapy takes a lot of time. But there are strategies we can practice each day to make things more manageable.

Re: BPD Newbie

Hey @J212 Thank you for sharing this with us. It sounds as though you resonate with the BPD diagnosis. In terms of the DBT program, have the dates and times been finalised yet? Hopefully that will make it a little easier for you to plan a schedule that could work for you! Keep us updated with how you're going, if you'd like to. 🙂

Re: BPD Newbie

Thank you for this it makes me feel a little less insane knowing that my feelings are valid. I don’t know when I’ll be starting DBT and I guess my concerns about work are more related to the financial pressures.
Thanks again.
