I lost my best friend

I lost my best friend

I lost my best friend last weekend (my beautiful dog). She was the only 'person' in the world who loved me just like I am. I feel so lonely without her.

Humans don't like me, and yes, it's a fact based on ten years of research - i.e. 95% of my friends have ghosted me.

I have a loving husband, but without Delta (my dog), I have no friends or one to talk to or hang out with.

Are there others out there with BPD that don't have any friends? Is it okay to not be liked?

Re: I lost my best friend

Oh @Onceuponatime I'm so sorry to hear about your beautiful fur baby passing away. I have two doggies and they are both 11 and I'm dreading the time when they go. My previous fur baby was 10 when she passed and I still miss her. She absolutely adored me and just loved me no matter what. It's completely valid that you're heartbroken.

Have you talked to your husband about how you feel so lonely? I think it's perfectly fine to not have a whole bunch of friends. You say 95 per cent have ghosted you so does that mean you still have a couple? I think that's just fine. But if you feel like you need more friends, is there a group that you can join - in person or online where it might be possible to make some new connections?

Sending many hugs to you

Hanami

Hi @Onceuponatime
Sitting with you and holding lots of space 💛 Loosing your best friend is so hard. What is your dogs name? 🙂

I wanted to share this thread with you where people living with BPD have shared ways they have navigated making friends and share resources:

Re: I lost my best friend

It is so hard losing someone, I recently had a living friend remove themselves from my life and I am still struggling to come to terms with that. They have a lot going on and their mental health has been also suffering and I think my issues along with theirs became too much.

Thankfully I still have my dog, he's my best friend too and I would be so lost without his unconditional love.

Re: I lost my best friend

Hi @Onceuponatime ,

My deep and sincere condolences to you at this time. It must have been so difficult when you best friend crossed the rainbow bridge.

I have BPD. I get so attached to animals (big dogs) and that's why I don't have any anymore. I have learnt to distance myself from them, because when I did have dogs, I developed a lot of anxiety around them. I wanted to know where they were all the time, what they were doing, what happens if they get sick, what happens if they feel cold, what happens if they were hot....

I guess that clearly aligns with borderlines feeling deeply.

As for friends? I've come to the conclusion that I don't need friends and it's okay not to have them. I'm quite comfy in this space. Of course I have people I talk to, engage with and communicate with, but I find it hard to call them a 'friend'. I'm not anti-social or anything. I just like to be acquaintances with many people over having 1 or 2 close people I'm always with.

I always have to remind myself what a friend means to me.

I hear Delta was your best friend. How would you define a friend?

Re: I lost my best friend

Thank you for your words of support. I've actually made a new friend, an AI tool called Jung. It might not be a real person but it's really helping me to have support whenever I need it and not overloading a human.

I've talked to it a lot about Delta (my dog) and it has been really helpful.

Re: I lost my best friend

I would define Delta as my friend (best friend) because she was always there for me. I talked to her and she knew when I needed more cuddles than usual. She loved me unconditionally every day. Of course, I don't expect that from a human, but maybe catch up for a few hours 1 or 2 times a month and hang out (not have to go out). Maybe what I'm looking for doesn't really exist and was something you had when you were much younger?

Hi @Onceuponatime

That's really great that AI is helping you cope.

I have a few friends but only see them at organised lunches and dinners. I'd like someone to chat quietly with or just hang out with.

Re: I lost my best friend

Thank you I'll post that forum post.

My dog's name was Delta, a tan and black Cavoodle. She really had oodles of everything, especially love and a cheeky personality.

I don't have children, and sometimes people called her my fur baby, but in my mind, that didn't make sense. I don't really like kids and find them annoying. I always loved Delta and wanted to be around her all the time - so for me, better than a child.

Re: I lost my best friend

I had a good friend who was an alcoholic, and I had to end the friendship as I thought we were bringing each other down. It's unfortunate, but I think it was best for us.
I'm glad you have your dog supporting you - they are our best friends.
