Preparing to end a relationship when I am in a very vulnerable state

Preparing to end a relationship when I am in a very vulnerable state

Hi guys, just looking for some advice here. I attempted suicide just over a week ago. It was very close to being successful. I had been under intense stress from university while trying to repress my depressive and anxious symptoms.

Now I'm back under intense stress from uni (uni supports aren't actually that helpful after all!) but I have my mum living with me and I'm accessing a psychologist and in contact with the CATT team.

Unfortunately, my relationship with my partner is not working out and I am going to have to finish it with him tomorrow (later today I guess). I'm unable to meet his needs and he doesn't seem to really understand how unwell I am right now. It's not fair on either of us, and the stress from fighting with him is really affecting me. We were together for 4 months but I was completely and totally enamoured with him and I know this will really hurt me - I'm also going to have to leave some mutual online social circles we were in (he was there first so it seems like the right thing to do).

I have my mum and brother with me but I don't have any other friends or social circle. I'm really worried about how this is going to affect me, keeping in mind that I still need to be meeting my university and work commitments, which are already quite stressful.

I've only been to my psychologist for one session and I really have no coping mechanisms in place.

If anyone could please provide me with some ideas on how I can get through something like this while I'm so unwell I would really appreciate it.

hi @hec

Thank you for posting here on the Forums!

I hear that you are sitting with a big decision to end a relationship and that must be challenging to deal with while you are in recovery. I just want to acknowledge that this is not an easy thing to deal with at the best of times so I can only imagine how that feels.

I did have a breakup that led to my MH declining and I made so choices at the time that made my life more challenging than it needed to be. You have the support of your mum and brother by the sounds of it so reach out to them when you need it. Also using phone support like SANE's Support Line found here Get support (sane.org) can be beneficial if we are not feeling great.

It's great that you have the CATT team and a psychologist while your mum is living with you. Please also reach out to crisis support if you need to chat with someone in crisis. When we are in the moment it can be really good to speak with someone and hear our thoughts as we speak and get feedback from another person. I will list some numbers here for you:

Lifeline: 13 11 14, www.lifeline.org.au

Suicide Call Back Service: 1300 659 467, www.suicidecallbackservice.org.au

1800 RESPECT: 1800 737 732, www.1800respect.org.au

Kids Helpline (up to ages 25): 1800 55 1800, http://kidshelpline.com.au/get-help/phone-counselling

Emergency: 000, www.triplezero.gov.au/triple-zero/How-to-Call-000

Uni and work commitments might be a distraction for you while you are going through this period and though they may be stressful could be worth putting your efforts into. Have you spoken with your uni about support around study or for your MH? I have been studying for a while and have a disability plan that supports me with extra support and extensions when I need them. Perhaps your uni has something similar that you can put in place to help with the stress.

Thank you again for reaching out to the Forums and please stay in contact here and the community of peers will support you too!

Take care
