How to encourage someone to get help
Hello and thank you for allowing me to be a part of this group. I’m in need of assistance or advice with my son. How do you get them to go and seek help? He’s 22 so I feel there is not much I can do, but I
am very concerned. I’m noticing his manic episodes are getting more concerning. He gets very grandiose, hyper, obsessive with channel vision and gets very obsessed with one thing, loses interest and then onto the next thing. I am extremely concerned if he doesn’t seek help either via counselling or medication that his brain will flip. He is just started uni again doing another course as he didn’t complete his first one, he started, he can’t stay at one thing and jumps from one thing to another. To add to the complexity of the matter, unfortunately my husband’s family are extremely toxic and have caused him a lot of trauma. We have nothing to do with them, however our son lets them back into his live and then he has another episode. They have also told him that you can’t trust Psychologist or counsellors. In the past he has not had good experiences when he was young with counsellors as we used to live in regional Australia and they just didn’t quite get what they were dealing with. I’m at a loss of how to help him and encourage him to get help or even talk to people that have a similar disease. I know he just wants to be normal and he thinks that the manic episodes and adhd give him an edge, which it doesn’t. The mixture of bipolar and ADHD and possibly narcissistic traits are not helping him. Any advice on how to best help him and also how to deal with my anxiety when he’s having an episode would be brilliant. Many thanks
